Max Verstappen didn't take his first title chance in Singapore, but can become Formula 1 world champion for the second time this week.
After a violent thunderstorm, the Dutchman was only seventh after five wins in a row on Sunday and had no chance when his Red Bull colleague Sergio Pérez triumphed.
Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz secured second and third place.
The international press writes about this:
Great Britain:
»The Sun«:
»Sergio Pérez opened an important F1 week with a controversial victory at the Singapore Grand Prix.«
»Daily Mail«:
»Max Verstappen has to wait for the Formula 1 crown, while teammate Sergio Pérez wins the Singapore Grand Prix ahead of Charles Leclerc … and Lewis Hamilton admits after his accident and ninth place: I suck built.«
»The Guardian«:
»The Singapore Grand Prix was advertised as a potential title decision for Max Verstappen, but instead of a coronation there was only bewilderment and regret.«
France:
»Le Figaro«:
»Pérez revels, Alpine drowns.«
»L'Équipe«:
»Max Verstappen is finally not just a winning machine that shatters the hopes of fans of this sport, which are already pretty shattered after Hamilton's dominance for almost ten years.
This weekend the World Champion has given them some fresh air by not dominating the discussions as he has been used to since the French Grand Prix on July 24th.”
Italy:
"La Gazzetta dello Sport":
"Perez looks like... Verstappen."
Spain:
"El Mundo Deportivo":
"'Mad Max' celebration postponed: Red Bull party for "Checo" (Pérez) in Singapore."
"El País":
"Pérez's second win cannot hide the bad weekend of the Dutchman (Verstappen) from Red Bull, who finished seventh and missed his first match point."
Austria:
»Kronen Zeitung«: «Curious punishment!
Pérez trembled for three hours for victory«.
Switzerland:
“Blick”:
“Pérez paid – but he remains the winner.”
"Tagesanzeiger":
"Farce in Formula 1: The winner is not determined until 2 a.m.."
