High Five performance: about the most prominent foreigners in the league | Israel today

2022-10-04T11:01:56.424Z

Lorenzo Brown will change the rules of the game • Wade Baldwin will be happy for more stability • Chris Johnson will continue to be an anchor • Jacob Brown will hope to stay healthy • And Chris Babb will have to carry a lot more • Ranking the five best foreigners in the Premier League

Last season's player in the Premier League, Chinano Onuaku, left a long time ago and joined the Italian Sasari.

This cleared a place in the top five foreigners of the upcoming season, which includes two new names who landed in Israel for the first time.

Which major group is missing from the list?

Hapoel Jerusalem, but this does not at all indicate the quality of the team.

1. Lorenzo Brown / Maccabi Tel Aviv

The 32-year-old guard comes after, as a citizen, he led the Spanish national team to win the European Championship, but mainly after a great season that was interrupted in the middle.

Since 2013, when he was selected 52nd in the draft, he has done everything to make a dent in the NBA, but after moving between the best league in the world and the development league, he realized that it was not working.

His European start was not amazing and included two mediocre years at Red Star Belgrade and Fenerbahce.

Last season he already showed what he's got, when he led Kazan, who just returned to the Euroleague, to a wonderful season.

He was the best coordinator in the factory and the king of his assists, and it's a shame that the removal of the Russian teams destroyed him.

Brown is a super team player, who won't look to steal the show.

He controls the team very well, is smart, experienced and can threaten from the outside.

And even though he's next on the list, even though Wade Baldwin is a flashier and more attractive player, as a first-round pick in the draft, Brown should be the one to change the rules of the game, as the best pure quarterback that's been around in years.

2. Wade Baldwin / Maccabi Tel Aviv

The 26-year-old guard is very reminiscent of Brown.

He too has shown instability in the NBA, started his career in Europe in an unpromising way and is now about to start his fourth season in the Euroleague.

The one who signed his arrival to Maccabi is David Blatt, who during his time as coach of Olympiakos landed Baldwin.

Even then he recognized the highest offensive talent of the player, which does not always bring it to the fore and it is quite simple to take him out of the game.

Unlike Brown, he can play in position 2 and be dangerous in that slot.

Baldwin was selected 17th in the draft, and within three years he had already left for Europe.

As mentioned, he first played in Olympiakos, but it was a fall for both sides.

This was followed by his best season in Europe, when he brought Bayern Munich to the Euroleague playoffs for the first time.

Last season, after a not-so-good start, a positive change came in Vitoria with the change of coaches.

In any case, this is the most brilliant name that landed in Israel this season.

3. Chris Johnson / Hapoel Holon

The 32-year-old forward is the biggest banker on this list.

The reasons: his achievements, stability and contribution, which does not depend on what form he is in.

Johnson gives his all in every game, and even if the ball doesn't go to him on a given night, he will contribute in many other aspects and bring a fighting spirit that will infect the others.

He is a player who connects the team, and gives his coach many options to use him.

This is his fourth season in Israel - a big advantage.

Johnson actually became an icon in Holon, where he is starting his third season.

His record in Israel: championship, cup - and in the last two years he was selected for the top five of the season and the defensive player of the season.

As mentioned, an anchor.

4. Jacob Brown / Hapoel Tel Aviv

The 32-year-old Lagarde is in his sixth season in Israel.

He is considered one of the greats who played here, but despite a good career in all three teams he played in Israel - Hapoel Gilboa/Galil, Hapoel Jerusalem, Hapoel Tel Aviv - there is a feeling of being missed, because he is a player who suffers from many injuries.

If not for the multiple injuries and absences, one can only imagine where he would have taken his teams and his career.

It's possible that with his amount of talent and leadership, he would have reached the realms of Wade Baldwin and Lorenzo Brown.

In fact, things have gotten so bad that building on it is kind of a gamble.

Hapoel Tel Aviv is doing this for the second season in a row, but this time it learned the lesson, because Brown will not be left without a backup and will not leave the team with a big void if he is absent again. This situation will allow him to help with load distribution, which will reduce the possibility of injuries.

Brown is one of the big winners who landed here, and he is waiting for only one thing - to complete a continuous and healthy season.

A season free of injuries and his absences can take Hapoel Tel Aviv to heights it has not known for a long time, and Brown to the top of the list of outstanding foreigners at the end of the season.

5. Chris Babb / Bnei Herzliya

The 32-year-old guard, if this would be his second season in Bnei Herzliya, would have been chosen as the player of the season last season if it weren't for his teammate Chinano Onuaku.

The athletic scorer, he is a winner who decided quite a few games here, while he shot more than a hundred three-pointers during the last season.

Babb has a very positive personality.

He is very dominant, has leadership abilities and a lot of experience even at the higher levels.

It can be said that the fact that Herzliya managed to keep him is a kind of achievement, because a second season has clear advantages, for the player and the team together.

However, it won't be easy for Babb to repeat the amazing last season because this time almost all the dominance rests on him, without sharing the load with Onuaku, the big man who would draw all the fire in the paint.

On the bench:

Jaylen Jones (Hapoel Haifa), Kadin Carrington (Hapoel Jerusalem), Robert Carter (Bnei Herzliya), Eric Griffin (Hapoel Eilat), Jaylen Hurd (Hapoel Tel Aviv)
