After all, the ice pirates of ESC Dorfen captured a point on Sunday evening from the Mighty Dogs of ERV Schweinfurt.

Schweinfurt/Dorfen – Only after a penalty shoot-out did the hosts have the additional point in their account at 3:2 (1:1, 1:1, 0:0; 1:0).

In front of almost 500 spectators, both parties had to start the Bayernliga season decimated.

With Joshua Bourne and Dylan Hood, Schweinfurt were even missing both contingent players.

On Friday evening, both teams had their dress rehearsals with the last test games.

In front of 1900 (!) spectators in the Schweinfurt Ice Dome it was the Lower Franconia derby against the state league team Hassfurt.

In this prestige duel, won by 6:3 goals, Hood had received a game suspension and thus a game ban.

The 32-year-old Canadian was the top scorer last season with 62 points from 31 games, but given his 116 penalty minutes, he is no child of sadness.

The Dorfen dress rehearsal was anything but an encouragement for Sunday.

A terrible goal-scoring and more and more mistakes, both in defense and in the game structure, led to the 1:4 defeat (0:0, 1:2, 0:2) against the league rivals EC Pfaffenhofen.

Urban Sodja scored the goal for Dorfen to make it 2-1 (40'), Christian Birk (2), David Felsöci and Tom Callaghan scored for Pfaffenhofen.

Ice Pirates coach Franz Steer is currently missing two-thirds of his defenders in Florian Fischer, Eric and Reik Walter, Max Huber, Florian Hartl and Gasper Susanj, as well as attackers Sandro Schroepfer and Lukas Kirsch.

Shortly before the bus left, Christoph Lönnig also called in sick.

As on Friday evening, the Ukrainian Dmytro Isayenko, who had a short-term license, had to play a defensive role again, "and as a trained striker he doesn't really like doing that," reveals Franz Steer.

18-year-old Benjamin Baumgartner and Felix Wiedenhofer, who is a year younger, celebrated their premiere in the Bavarian league.

The latter also scored the 2-2 equalizer in interaction with 20-year-old Felix Lohmaier, who came from Klostersee.

"If the established simply don't hit the goal, it's up to the youngsters to fix it," stated Dorfen's sporting director Hans Ertl.

According to the course of the game and especially the chances to score, there was more possible, "but if you have to get through the last five minutes almost completely with one man less, you have to be satisfied," admitted Ertl.

The game had started with an early penalty against the Ice Pirates, and the Mighty Dogs had turned this superiority into a lead at 1:59 minutes.

"I warned my team about the stormy start in Schweinfurt," said Franz Steer.

Luckily, Tomas Vrba, also outnumbered, had the quick answer ready.

"We were then able to stop the many disc losses from the initial phase and had the better chances to score as the game progressed," says the ESC coach.

"Christian Göttlicher alone failed to capitalize on two or three top chances against a very strong goalkeeper Roßberg after the second break."

Steer also pointed out that two other players, Isayenko in the second and Steiner in the last third, were out.

In the penalty shoot-out, Vrba scored for ESC and Christian Masel and Alexander Asmus for ERV.

"It's also a matter of luck," said Steer.
