Indonesian investigators are working to piece together what led to one of the worst disasters in football history, here is the footage of the events in Malang stadium, verified by AFP.

A crowd movement that occurred after the police wanted to repel supporters with tear gas killed 131 people on Saturday evening, including 32 children.

Using interviews with several officials, eyewitness accounts, and verified photos and videos taken during the evening, AFP reconstructed the chain of events that led to chaos for about ten minutes after the end of a match in the Kanjuruhan stadium in Malang (East Java).

9:47 p.m.: doors closed

After kick-off at 8:00 p.m. local time, the match was uneventful in the first and second half in a stadium packed with 42,000 supporters of local team Arema FC.

The match ended at 9:57 p.m., according to the metadata of the images studied.

But 10 minutes before, the gates of the stadium were still closed, contrary to custom.

This malfunction was blamed on "instructions given late" and officials "who had not yet arrived", according to Indonesian Football Federation spokesman Ahmad Riyadh.

Several testimonies and images confirm this version.

But police dispute that, saying the exit doors were all open.

After the final whistle, a series of events culminated in tragedy.

10:17 p.m.: the overgrown lawn

The players had taken some time off on the pitch after the game and their 3-2 loss to Persebaya Surabaya, according to video metadata.

They then crossed the field to greet supporters who were waiting for them in the East tier at 10:17 p.m., the metadata for the images and videos show.

Two supporters entered the field to meet the players.

One of them seems to be scolding them but then he hugs a player, according to photos.

A video shows several fans in the stands giving the players the middle fingers.

A third supporter enters the field and attracts the attention of stewards who try to catch him, videos and photos reveal.

A fourth spectator also arrives on the field, according to the video images, seen by security who fails to catch him.

Dozens of other supporters then enter the field, according to the images and videos.

The stewards try to prevent them and ask them to return to the stands.

10:19 p.m.: riot police arrive

At 10:18 p.m., stewards began escorting players to the changing rooms as fans continued to invade the pitch, video footage shows.

At 10:19 p.m., videos show the first smoke bombs from the West terrace falling in the area where the players are being escorted.

Dozens of supporters are now on the field.

Another smoke bomb is sent from the same bleacher, according to video images.

Riot police begin to deploy with batons and shields from the north of the stadium, footage shows.

At 10:20 p.m., fans retreated to the East Stand as police chased them, some with truncheons, according to videos and photos.

Projectiles are sent by the crowd towards the police.

At 10:22 p.m., clashes began between police and supporters on the pitch, according to video footage.

Supporters can be heard on recordings asking their friends to return to the stands.

Video footage shows police advancing north to repel supporters as they lose control of the situation.

10:25 p.m .: tear gas, jostling

According to the video images, around 10:25 p.m., the police began to send tear gas into the East and West stands.

The supporters respond with throwing projectiles towards the police and some enter the field to reach them.

At 10:26 p.m., new tear gas jets are visible in the videos.

Many supporters rush to the closed doors, the footage shows, hoping to escape the gases which witnesses said made the air unbreathable.

As they fled, many were trampled or suffocated to death by a crowd moving past several closed doors as well as others that were open but too small to let large numbers of people through, according to survivors.

Dozens of people died in a stampede outside Gate 13, where the West and South tiers meet, according to surviving witnesses.

Authorities did not say how many people had died there.

At this time, the photographers and videographers stopped taking images to help the victims, while the police stayed on the side, according to several witnesses interviewed by AFP.

A few minutes later, the images show that the police disappeared from the field when the supporters tried to escape the tear gas.

Police said some 3,000 supporters invaded the pitch.

Photographers saw supporters taking victims in an ambulance onto the pitch or outside the stadium.

Within minutes dozens of people lost their lives and many more in hospitals in the country's worst sporting event disaster.
