2022-10-06T14:38:47.053Z

The young judoka who finished fifth in the world championship, is optimistic after the successful day he had: "Unfortunately, this time it ended without a medal, but I am starting to establish my status in the seniors and on the way to the Paris 2024 Olympics"

It was close, even very close.

At the end of a great day of fights, Yam Volchek, who competes in the weight category up to 60 kg, surrendered in the battle for the bronze to the world's number one - Yang Yong-wei from Taiwan, the silver medalist from Tokyo and finished in fifth place.

The 19-year-old Volchek is considered the next thing on the men's team.

He proved himself at the young ages and recently even won the bronze medal at the European Youth Championships in Prague, today (Thursday), he showed that he has a lot of potential in the senior round as well, and along the way secured his place in the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

"I'm finishing a long and tough day," Valchek said at the end.

"Unfortunately, this time it ended without a medal, but I'm starting to establish my status in the seniors and on the way to the Paris Olympics 2024. It's always a feeling of failure to finish without a medal, sorry it ended like this, but there is optimism to continue and I feel that I made progress today. I hope that next time will end better ".

"I want to take this opportunity to thank the whole family that accompanies me. I'm also talking about my real family, also about my judo club, the personal trainers and everyone who supports me."

Tomorrow, on the second day of the championship, the eyes will be on Geffen Primo (up to 52 kg), last year's bronze medalist, who will open against a Cuban opponent, and if she reaches the quarterfinals, she is expected to meet the Japanese Olympic champion Ota Abe, who has not lost since 2019.

Two Israelis will compete in the weight category up to 66 kg. Baruch Shmailov will start directly in the second round against an opponent from Costa Rica, and Tal Flicker, the bronze medalist from 2015, will face a Serbian opponent in the first fight. If he wins, he will face the world's number one, Denis Viaro of Moldova.
