After two spectacular victories in the quarter and semi-finals, host China was too strong for superstar Fan Zhendong. This left the German table tennis men in second place in the absence of several top players.

As expected, the German table tennis aces were not able to gild their surprising path to success at the Team World Championships in Chengdu, China.

The team of national coach Jörg Roßkopf was clearly defeated by the favored defending champion and host China 0:3, but was able to console itself with the fourth World Cup silver medal for a German men's team in the last five World Cup tournaments since 2010.

Overall, the selection of the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB), which competed without their top players and last year's Olympic silver medalists Timo Boll, Dimitri Ovtcharov and Patrick Franziska, was in a World Cup final for the seventh time.

With the bronze medal in the women's competition in Chengdu, both DTTB teams won a medal at a World Championship for the third time after 1997 and 2010.

The German European champion teams also won the only two medals for Europe in China.

China's men celebrated their tenth consecutive World Cup triumph.

With a total of 22 titles, Germany's long-term rival made the expected double success for the World Cup hosts perfect.

After catching up in the quarterfinals against France (3:2 after 0:2) and in the semifinals against South Korea (3:2 after 1:2), the World Cup final debutants Dang Qiu, Kay-Stumper (both Düsseldorf) and Benedikt Duda ( Bergneustadt) lost in the final against China's concentrated superiority.

Duda, match winner against both France and South Korea, was unable to fulfill hopes of an upset at the start against world champion and world number one Fan Zhendong.

Set win against Ma Long

European Championship champion Qiu at least got a set against Olympic champion Ma Long, before junior European champion Stumper had to accept the decisive loss of points against mixed world champion Wang Chuqin.

“We can all be super proud of the boys.

Of course, the final is crazy," said record European champion Boll in a video message.

But: "The Chinese were super strong again."
