"One for Bayern Munich": Matthäus has a proposal for a new successor

Lothar Matthäus sees Gregor Kobel from Borussia Dortmund as a possible successor.
Munich – Manuel Neuer (36) has long been an institution at Bayern.
With some headwind from the fan ranks ("Koan Neuer"), the national goalkeeper moved from FC Schalke 04 to Säbener Straße in 2011 and has since become an integral part of the Bayern goal.
After Philipp Lahm (38) retired in 2017, he also took over the captain's armband at the record champions.

Even at the age of 36, Neuer still regularly delivers world-class performances.
Nevertheless, the Bayern bosses have been dealing with a successor regulation for some time.
Because one thing is clear: FCB aspires to having one of the best goalkeepers in the world between its posts.
The end of Neuer's career is currently not in sight, he only extended his contract until 2024 in May of this year. But sooner or later it will happen.

Recently there were rumors in the Spanish press that Marc-André ter Stegen (30) from FC Barcelona was "a priority" for FC Bayern.
Lothar Matthäus (61) brings another name into play: Gregor Kobel (24) from Borussia Dortmund.
“Kobel is one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga.
At some point he will certainly be one for Bayern Munich," wrote the 1990 world champion in his
Sky
column.
Matthäus is certain: "He might have held one or the other against Bayern."

In the "classic" on Saturday evening, substitute goalkeeper Alexander Meyer (31) was in the BVB goal because Kobel was injured.
After several stops in the Bundesliga, the Swiss has been playing for Dortmund since 2021.
"The defenders in front of Kobel can rest easy.
You know that he can also hold impossible ones," continued the 61-year-old, who sees parallels to his own playing career: "It used to be the case for me too, when I knew that Oliver Kahn was behind me.
That is a very important security for the whole team.”

FCB sports director Hasan Salihamidzic (45) took a first step towards succeeding Manuel Neuer by signing Schalke keeper Alexander Nübel (26) in the summer of 2020. But the challenger and the top dog seemed to be strangers to each other.
Neuer made no move to vacate his regular place, and so Nübel rarely got a chance.
Just one year later, Bayern loaned Nübel to AS Monaco for two seasons and brought back ex-substitute Sven Ulreich (34) from Hamburger SV.

Nübel sent a clear message to the Bayern bosses from Monaco: “There is no way I can come back if Manu is still there.
I'm definitely not doing that, I can rule out that I'll sit on the bench again at Bayern.” It is also more than questionable whether Gregor Kobel will be number two behind Manuel Neuer.
For FC Bayern, he will probably only come into question when the old master has ended his career.
And then Kobel should be an expensive option for the record champions, not least thanks to his top performances.
