La 106ª edición de la corsa rosa saldrá el 6 de mayo, de Fossacesia, en la Costa de los Trabocchi, estructuras de madera como arañas plantadas junto a la orilla que construyeron en el mar los pescadores en el litoral de los Abruzos, al sur de Pescara. Allí, siguiendo la línea del mar por un carril bici, se disputará la primera de las tres contrarrelojes, 18,4 kilómetros llanos hasta Ortona, y un repechito. La segunda será la novena etapa, el domingo 14 de mayo, 33,6 kilómetros llanos entre el Rubicón y Cesena, en la Romaña de Marco Pantani, el escalador muerto en la vecina Rímini a quien se habrá recordado más aún dos días antes, con la llegada, la segunda en alto, al Campo Emperador, en el Gran Sasso, la gran cumbre de los Abruzos (2.135 metros), allá donde en 1999 voló él y se congeló Chava Jiménez.
En la segunda semana, destaca la etapa de Crans Montana, en Suiza, país al que se llega remontando el valle de Aosta y superando col del Gran San Bernardo, una subida tendidísima e interminable (34 kilómetros) que con sus 2.469 metros será la cima más alta, la Cima Coppi del Giro del 23.
Como acostumbra el Giro, la tercera semana será la de la indigestión de montañas y de nombres. El martes 23 de mayo, el monte Bondone sobre Trento, una de las cimas míticas de la colección de Landa, allá donde en 1956 Charly Gaul, un día terrible de frío, lluvia y nieve, dejó al segundo a más de ocho minutos y ganó su Giro. El jueves, Val di Zoldo, el aperitivo dolomítico. El viernes, boom, las Tres Cimas de Lavaredo. La más fotografiada y hermosa de las llegadas de los Dolomitas, los tres dientes pálidos sobre el refugio de Auronzo (2.304 metros), donde termina la carretera tras una subida de siete kilómetros, con pendientes de hasta el 18%, regresa al Giro 10 años después del triunfo de Nibali un día de nieve de mayo de 2013. Será el escalón final de la llamada Escalera Santa de los Dolomitas, iniciada con el paso Giau y, después de Cortina d’Ampezzo, continuada con el de las Tres Cruces, la escalera en la que José Manuel Fuente, Tarangu, firmó en el Giro del 74 la última de las grandes victorias de su corta e intensísima carrera, el último día de dolor de Merckx en sus cinco Giros victoriosos también. Será, con sus 5.400 metros de desnivel en 182 kilómetros, la etapa reina, la más dura de un Giro montañoso como siempre, y aún más, queda el sábado final, reservado para una cronoescalada, el último duelo soñado, quizás utópico, entre Egan y Remco. Será en el inédito Monte Lussari, desde Tarvisio, en los confines entre el Friuli y Eslovenia: 11,3 kilómetros llanos y, después de un cambio de bicicleta, una ascensión durísima de 7,3 kilómetros al 12,1%. Los cinco primeros kilómetros son una pendiente continua al 15,3% con un pequeño paso al 22%, y dicen que es parangonable al Zoncolan, qué empinado. Los dos y medio finales son más suaves, aunque a un kilómetro de la cima, situada a 1,760 metros de altitud, se pasa por Sella Prasing, una zona del 22% again.
