Werder Bremen has distanced itself from its former goalkeeper Tim Wiese because of his repeated public contact with well-known people from the right-wing milieu.

The club said in a statement.

At the weekend, photos of the former international and Werder player appeared on social media, suggesting contacts in the right-wing scene.

At a meeting, the club has now decided to draw consequences.

"We had an open, but also very serious conversation with Tim at the beginning of the year and made it unmistakably clear to him that this approach would not fit with the values of SV Werder Bremen," said club president Hubertus Hess-Grunewald in a statement from the club cited .

»Despite his statements, we have doubts that Tim does not feel a part of these circles.

But there must be no doubts about the attitude we take at Werder Bremen.”

Wiese will no longer receive invitations to official events for the time being, and he will no longer play for the club's traditional team.

Wiese is said to have been informed of this step by those responsible for the club.

Fans with clear words against meadow

Two weeks ago, at a Werder home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach, the fans distanced themselves from the former club goalkeeper.

"Anyone who hangs out with Nazis has no place in the Weser Stadium - no stage for Tim Wiese," read a banner in the stadium.

Photos had previously appeared on social media that are said to show Wiese with a member of the rocker group "Radical Comrades Bremen".

Wiese then distanced himself from a connection to the right spectrum.

The ex-keeper played for Werder from 2005 to 2012 and became a Bremen club legend in 266 competitive games.

In 2009 he won the DFB Cup with the club.

Just a few weeks ago he took part in Werder legend Claudio Pizarro's farewell game.

Wiese played his last professional game in 2013 for TSG Hoffenheim.
