The legendary former soccer player of the Iranian national team, Ali Dai, continues to walk a tightrope in his homeland, with criticism of the regime and reserved support for the many protesters who took to the streets in the last month.
Dai was recently questioned by the security forces and his passport was confiscated.
This time the focus is on the publicized death of Asra Panahi, a girl whose age was reported to range from 13 to 16. Panahi died on October 12 - according to reports after she was beaten at the school she attended in the city of Ardabil by the security forces because she refused to participate in a song praising The supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
The authorities denied the reports and claimed that the unfortunate Panahi died due to a cardiac event and in recent days the mayor of Ardabil even claimed that she committed suicide by taking pills "due to family problems", according to him.
Dai, according to many the greatest Iranian players of all time, followed the developments because he was born and raised in Ardabil and the mayor's words made him angry.
"You lie," he addressed him in an open letter he published on Instagram, "I know what happened in my city. Do you represent the people of Ardabil, or are you a spokesman for the government? History has proven that liars are exposed."

In recent weeks Dai has expressed his opinion several times to his 10 million followers on Instagram.
At the end of September, for example, he wrote: "Instead of repression, violence and arrests of Iranian citizens, it is time to solve their problems."
Dai's stuff puts him in danger and he's not the first.
Another great former footballer, Ali Karimi, a few weeks ago openly supported the protesters and called on the heads of the army to switch sides and join the civilians.
Karimi, who lives in Dubai, was found guilty of "inciting riots" after being tried in absentia and he will not return to Iran in the near future.
