The sailing industry in Israel recorded a double celebration this evening (Saturday), when Daniela Peleg won the silver medal at the World Championship in the new Olympic model IQ Foyle held in France, while the bronze medal went to Maya Morris.
This is the second time in history, that Israel achieves a double podium at the World Championships, after in 2013, Lee Korzitz won the gold and Mayan Davidovich got the bronze, returning the athletes in blue and white to the front of the field and a lot of hope for Paris 2024.
In addition, Peleg, who just celebrated her 18th birthday yesterday, won gold in the under-21 championship and is one of the youngest ever to win a place on the podium in the important senior competition.
"Wow, what a crazy feeling. I haven't really digested it yet," said Peleg at the end, "it was an amazing competition full of ups and downs, to think that even in the first cruise I got injured and I thought I had finished my way in the world championship. In the first jump I fell on my leg and took a strong hit, luckily Dalia the doctor was with Eli on the boat, she bandaged me and in great pain I continued to compete and somehow I had a crazy day."
"From there the competition got better and better and so did the habit. There were obscene and challenging conditions, a changing wind with many changes. I am very, very happy with my final result, I feel that I worked very hard for this and I deserve it. I have been waiting for this medal in the seniors for a long time and I am not happy right now. I I want to say thank you to all the professional staff who supported us and of course to Shahar Zavari our coach who built a powerful and strong team."
Morris said: "I still haven't digested the win. It was a tough week with a high level. I was able to enter the Rice Medal in 9th place and with the new system anything is possible. The conditions today were very challenging with light winds which is in my favor because I am strong in these conditions."
"I won the quarter-final race, I finished second in the semi-finals after Daniela, and when we realized that we both had a medal, it was crazy. In the final race, the Italian woman who came further than us managed to shine while Daniela and I were tired from the previous races, and so we finished 2nd and 3rd. It is very exciting 2 medals for Israel. I am very I'm glad that the chosen slavery is paying off and we're seeing results."
