The captain of the Belgium team, Eden Hazard, claims that he and his teammates need to win the World Cup in Qatar to justify the nickname "Golden Generation" that they have carried for the last ten years.
The 31-year-old winger, who since his arrival at Real Madrid has not been particularly impressive and will participate in his third World Cup, hopes to go further than the third place achieved by the Red Devils in Russia 2018.
"I have to raise the bar. We have to try to do better than in 2018. It will be difficult because we did quite well," Hazard said in an interview with the FIFA website, "I am lucky to be the captain of a great team and a great football nation, so I have to Create high expectations for ourselves."
A generation of top players representing some of Europe's biggest clubs such as Hazard, Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku are giving hope to a nation of 12 million people that they can finally win the World Cup.
"They always talk about the 'golden generation' but there is some truth to it. We spent almost 10 years together. Now we have young players who are starting to progress," said Hazar.
"We have an amazing generation of players, but we haven't won anything yet. If we really want to win that 'golden generation' nickname, I think that's the only thing we still have to do. Our team experience has definitely helped us in previous tournaments, so I hope that continues In the same way in Qatar."
Belgium will open the World Cup against Canada on November 23 before facing Morocco four days later and Croatia on December 1.
