In Spain, fears are growing for the fate of Santiago Garcia, who disappeared after crossing the border from Iraq to Iran on October 2.

On January 8, Garcia set out on a long walking journey, about 7,000 kilometers long, from Madrid to Qatar.

His plan was to arrive at the time of the World Cup, but as mentioned, he has been absent for over three weeks.

The 41-year-old Garcia, a former soldier in the Spanish army, was already famous in 2019.

So he cycled from Madrid to Saudi Arabia to watch the Spanish Super Cup.

To his delight, his beloved team, Real Madrid, lifted the trophy at the end of a game in which they beat Atlético Madrid on penalties.

This time Garcia decided to give up the bike and make the long journey on foot.

His plan was to cross two continents (Europe and Asia), in 15-16 countries.

Try to cover about 25 kilometers a day to get to the World Cup on time - even if not for the opening match.

Praying for his safety.

The Spaniard traveled with a cart carrying basic equipment, a tent and a sleeping bag tied to his body.

Occasionally he came to restaurants or inns and offered to do cleaning work in exchange for food and a bed.

In some places he found families who offered to host him.

He made sure to send his parents and a few friends his exact location every day via WhatsApp and regularly updated his followers on his Instagram account.

Garcia started moving from Spain east and south.

At one point he told his friends in the WhatsApp group that he was debating whether to "walk south through Iraq and Iran or Israel and Jordan."

Finally he chose to move from Turkey to Iraq and from there he tried to continue to Iran.

On October 2 he informed that he was reaching the border and since then he has disappeared.

Garcia's family is now in regular contact with the authorities in Spain, who are trying to help.

The police are involved, diplomats too, but in the latest update from Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Garcia family was told that no trace of him had yet been found.

In recent days, the world media has begun to show great interest in his story, and perhaps this way the path to finding him will be shortened.
