There is quite a bit of negative talk around the World Cup in Qatar.
The fact that it will be held for the first time in the winter and the burden on the players, the doubts about the way it received the hospitality from FIFA, the fact that it intends to limit the alcohol consumption of the fans are just some of the criticisms. Its the Arab country for the LGBT community and the expectation that gays and lesbians will not show affection in public.
James Calverley, the British foreign minister, chose today (Wednesday) to stand by Qatar and called on fans from the kingdom who intend to accompany England and Wales to behave with respect towards its mentality.
"They want to make sure that the fans are safe and have fun, but that the fans know that they have to make compromises when it comes to behavior in a Muslim country that has different social norms than ours," he said, "Britain has very important partners in the Middle East. These are countries with a completely different culture to ours. When you Hosted in a certain place, it is important that you respect the culture of the country you are in. With a little effort and compromise on both sides, it can be a safe and exciting World Cup."
Poorly worded comments from the foreign secretary @JamesCleverly - which seems to excuse human rights violations on the basis of Qatar being a 'Muslim country'.

Lucy Powell from the Labor Party attacked Calverley in response and said, among other things: "Many fans think they cannot come to support their team in the tournament because of Qatar's record in terms of maintaining human rights, the treatment of workers and the lack of LGBT rights.
The government should ask FIFA how it put fans in such a situation and take care of the fans' safety, not defend discriminatory values."
