Time difference in Qatar and Germany: Useful information on the calculation and transmission of the individual games at the 2022 World Cup.

Doha – The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is the first football World Cup in history to be held in winter.

This change is due to the climate at the venue.

With the outside temperature sometimes exceeding 40 °C in the summer months, enormous cooling devices would have been necessary in the emirate to cool the temperature on the playing fields down to a moderate 20 to 25 degrees.

There is also a time difference, as Qatar is in a different time zone.

This results in some other interesting peculiarities.

Time difference in Qatar: That's why there are different seasons at the 2022 World Cup

The 2022 World Cup will take place in the Middle East, in the Emirate of Qatar.

This makes it one of the football events that are in a different time zone for Central Europeans.

This has often happened in the past, such as:

  • 2010 in South Africa

  • 2014 in Brazil

  • 2018 in Russia

Due to the time difference in Qatar, football fans have to be prepared for deviations from the usual playing times - all dates and games can be found in our schedule.

Fortunately, the difference is relatively small, so that the games in Germany are broadcast live on TV at quite comfortable transmission times.

World Cup 2022: Calculating the time difference between Qatar and Germany

The so-called world time with its time zones serves as the basis for the uniform calculation of the time worldwide.

The abbreviation for this is UTC (=Universal Time Coordinated).

The starting point for the time zones of the world is the zero meridian, i.e. the degree of longitude on which the English city of Greenwich is located.

That is why the world time used to be called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

From there, scientists divided the globe like an orange into many other equally sized sections.

Each segment differs from its neighbors by exactly one hour.

Based on this it is very easy to calculate the time difference in Qatar:

Gladbach loses to Bilbao

  • In Germany there is UTC plus 1 hour or UTC +1 for short, this time is also known as Central European Time (CET).

  • In summer, Central European Summer Time applies in this country and is UTC +2.

  • Qatar observes Arabic Standard Time or Arabia Standard Time with UTC +3 all year round, as the country does not differentiate between summer and winter time.

This means that the time difference between Qatar and Germany is two hours in the summer months.

In winter, when the 2022 World Cup takes place, Germany will have winter time again.

Therefore, the difference is then only one hour.

Time difference in Qatar: The games of the 2022 World Cup are running at these times

Due to the time difference between Qatar and Germany, the times for the football World Cup 2022 are as follows:

  • Depending on the draw, the World Cup group matches will start at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. CET.

  • In the knockout phase, the games start at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. CET.

  • The final will be held on December 18, 2022 at 4pm CET.

This means that the soccer World Cup will end exactly on the 4th of Advent this year.

World Cup 2022 – there are these special features apart from the time difference in Qatar

Apart from the time difference and the special times for broadcasting the games, Qatar is an interesting venue in another respect.

The 2022 World Cup is the first football World Cup to be held in an Arab country.

There are also some other specials:

  • The World Cup is relatively short at 28 days.

  • The group stage will have four games per day.

  • Except in some fan zones, alcohol consumption is prohibited at this event.

There are also prayer rooms in the stadiums.

If the soccer games fall within the usual five times a day prayer times, the devout Muslims retreat there in order to fulfill their religious duties undisturbed.
