Education City Stadium at the 2022 World Cup: Which games will be played here?

The Education City Stadium was rebuilt for the 2022 World Cup in the city of al-Rayyan and will later serve as a sports facility for student teams.

Doha – The diamond-shaped geometric patterns of the outer walls are the first thing that catches the eye at Education City Stadium.

The stadium, which was newly built for the 2022 World Cup, is to remain after the end of the tournament and then serve as a venue for the sports teams from the nearby universities.

Education City Stadium: background to the construction

The so-called Education City is a sprawling complex of state-of-the-art educational institutions on the outskirts of al-Rayyan, just a few kilometers from the capital, Doha.

Since 2003, numerous universities, scientific research institutions and other educational institutions have settled on twelve square kilometers, where young people from over 50 countries study.

Education City is complemented by a convention center, the National Library of Qatar and a golf course, as well as the neighboring Arab Museum of Modern Art.

As part of the further expansion, the Education City Stadium was designed with 40,000 seats, which will be reduced to 25,000 seats after the 2022 World Cup and will serve as a sports facility for the student teams.

Like all World Cup stadiums, it is air-conditioned to cool the interior air to a comfortable 27°C.

The magnificent design, created by Fenwick Iribarren Architects and Pattern, combines traditional Islamic architecture with the latest technology.

Education City Stadium: sustainability and short distances

Education City Stadium became the first of Qatar's new stadiums to receive a 5-star rating from Qatar's Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS).

55 percent of the materials used in construction were from sustainable sources and 28 percent of the materials were partially recycled.

Football fans can easily travel to the games of the 2022 World Cup by public transport.

The Green Line of the Doha Metro stops in the immediate vicinity.

The many cycle paths that run through Education City are also rather unusual for Qatar.

Tourists can rent bikes by the hour or by the day and store them in the spacious bike garages near the stadium.

Like all stadiums of the 2022 World Cup, the Education City Stadium is also fully air-conditioned.

To do this, the hot outside air is sucked in with electricity generated from solar energy, cooled down and released into the interior.

• November 28, 4 p.m.: South Korea v Ghana

• November 30, 6 p.m.: Tunisia-France

• December 2, 6 p.m.: South Korea v Portugal

• December 6, 6 p.m.: Round of 16

• December 9, 6 p.m.: Quarterfinals

Construction scandals

As with all stadiums, the construction of the Education City stadium was also the subject of controversy over the working and living conditions of the foreign construction workers in Qatar.

Human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have criticized the intolerable conditions and the adherence to the traditional Arabic kafala system, in which workers are completely at the mercy of employers.

Passports are often withdrawn immediately upon arrival in Qatar and wages are paid only irregularly.

To do this, the construction workers often had to work for hours without a break in the scorching heat of 50 °C.
