The professional committee of the referees union admitted today (Thursday) that Tamir Glazer should not have received a red card in Hapoel Haifa's match against Beitar Jerusalem. As you may remember, in the 33rd minute the midfielder slid into the ball together with Ofir Kriaf, and received a straight red card from the referee Niv Steif - which angered the club members.
"This is an irresponsible offense at the highest level and not a serious game offense and therefore a yellow card is issued," said the committee.
"The referee of the match gave too much weight in this case to the result of the tackle. Considering the circumstances of the incident, the professional committee believes that it was right to settle for a yellow card."
Regarding the second red card that Kwame Kavi received, Steif backed up: "This is a serious game offense, which requires a red card. Hitting a high point of contact, through exposed corks. After examining the incident on the screen, the player was rightly sent off with a direct red card and not with a second yellow card."
They also referred to Eitan Shmuelevich's decision to award Maccabi Tel Aviv a penalty against Hapoel Beer Sheva - which was overturned with the help of the VAR screen: "This is a contact threshold that does not justify a penalty kick. After examining the screen, the decision was rightly overturned, including the yellow card that was waved."
