Football fans who want to be there live at the 2022 World Cup need to consider a few things when traveling to Qatar.

There is important information here.

Doha – As the Official Airline of the 2022 World Cup, Qatar Airways offers a variety of all-inclusive packages for football fans who want to watch the games live in November and December.

The only catch: Only frequent flyers who are members of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club can book.

However, there are many other ways to book flights to Qatar.

Flights to the 2022 World Cup: Airlines and prices

The national airline Qatar Airways offers two direct flights daily from Frankfurt and Munich and one direct flight daily from Berlin.

In May, the prices were around 700 to 800 euros for a return flight, depending on the day of the flight.

If you want to book at short notice in November, you have to reckon with significantly higher prices - these are now even in the four-digit range.

In addition, there is a whole range of international airlines that bring passengers from various German airports to their hubs via feeder flights in order to board the flights to Doha from there.

This includes:

  • Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul)

  • Pegasus Airlines (via Istanbul-Sabiha)

  • Royal Jordanian (via Amman)

  • British Airways (via London Heathrow)

Lufthansa, which does not regularly offer any direct flights to Qatar, has set up special fan flights from Frankfurt between November 14 and December 19 especially for the 2022 World Cup.

On other dates there is the option of flying to Kuwait with Lufthansa and from there to Qatar with Kuwait Airways.

Flights to the 2022 World Cup: Doha Airport

Qatar's only international airport is Hamad International Airport in the capital, Doha.

This was put into operation in 2014 as a replacement for Doha International Airport, which had become too small.

A special feature is the construction on an artificial peninsula off the coast: Since the planes take off and land over the sea, the noise pollution caused by the flights for the residents of the city is reduced enormously.

The airport is connected to the Doha metro system, which takes around 15 minutes to get to the city centre.

There are also numerous taxis available to take football fans arriving to their hotels at reasonable prices during the 2022 World Cup.

Flights to Qatar: duration and arrival

Direct flights to Qatar take about six hours.

It is not uncommon for flights to arrive late in the evening or even in the middle of the night.

The Lufthansa fan flights to the 2022 World Cup, for example, land at 00.45 a.m.

In this case, it may make sense to book a hotel near the airport for the first night after arrival.

The airport itself is open 24 hours a day.

Flights to the 2022 World Cup: regulations upon entry

German football fans only need a valid passport to enter Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, but no visa.

You will receive a Visa Waiver stamp upon arrival at the airport, which entitles you to a maximum stay of 90 days.

However, it should be noted here that from November 1st only people with a valid World Cup ticket will be allowed to enter the country.

If you have a valid ticket, you will receive a corresponding fan ID, the so-called Hayya Card - further information can be found on the Hayya portal specially set up for this purpose.

In connection with the corona pandemic, travelers will no longer have to present a corona test from November 1, 2022.

However, the rule still applies that you can only enter Qatar if you are fully vaccinated.

The obligation to download the government's Ehteraz app upon entry is also eliminated.

Since these specifications may be adapted to the current situation, it is advisable to do some research before you leave.
