Thrilling 2:1 victory of the Tölzer Löwen in the penalty shootout against Deggendorfer SC
Bad Tölz – Die Löwen discover the penalty shootout for themselves.
If the shootout has not been one of the specialties of a Tölz ice hockey team, they broke their four-game streak without a win in an entertaining, balanced game on Friday evening and won the encounter with Deggendorfer SC 2:1 nP.
Erik Gollenbeck and Ludwig Nirschl scored for Tölz - in a sovereign manner - after Tyler Ward had frittered away his attempt.
At Deggendorf, Thomas Matheson and Thomas Pielmeier awarded.
"It's nice that we won again," says Löwen trainer Ryan Foster.
"It was time."
Tölzer Löwen break the negative series
It was a tight game where strong goalkeepers prevented a higher result.
Foster: "It's good that our young players step into the breach while the top performers are out.
They do their job very well.” Enrico Salvarani in the Tölzer Tor almost drove the guests to despair with his stoic calm and safe gloves.
His opponent Timo Pielmeier couldn't complain about a lack of work either.
Above all, Nirschl tested him.
Ward and Captain Philipp Schlager.
"But we often make it too complicated in front of goal," complains Foster.
Nevertheless, the keeper had to deal with 33 shots each.
Salvarani on the spot, Nirschl in top scorer style
Both teams set a good pace from the start, pressed and were relatively solid defensively.
Tölz initially had more of the game.
Oliver Ott tried it from the blue, but in the hustle and bustle he couldn't get a follow-up shot.
The hosts safely survived a man down situation and Salvarani was there when Matheson or Petr Stloukal attacked.
And Nirschl confirmed his image as a goalscorer when he ripped off a counterattack to take the lead 1-0.
Both teams not full
Deggendorf, who, like the lions, did not start with a full squad, remained dangerous and had periods of pressure with a number of chances.
Salvarani was initially the winner against Pielmeier, Stloukal and Lukas Miculka.
But when Dennis Dietmann, who reported back from sick leave with a missed shot and two penalties, followed captain Philipp Schlager to the penalty box, Deggendorf equalized with a double majority.
Matheson had plenty of time to adjust his sights on his shot and didn't even give Salvarani a chance.
Everything open again in the final third.
Ripped off in the penalty shootout
But there were no goals in the hard-fought third period or in extra time.
And that despite the fact that the lions had multiple opportunities in the power play.
Even an unbelievable phase of pressure shortly before the end - Ward and Nirschl put Pielmeier under constant fire - didn't bring anything.
The goalkeepers excelled again in extra time.
The Tölzers missed their chances - even when they were allowed to play the extra time with a 4:3 majority.
But they used their attempts at penalty shootouts all the more ripped off: After Erik Gollenbeck's hit and Ward's failed attempt, Nirschl finally became the match winner with his sly no-move move.
