Tensions between the fan organizations in Haifa rise to a level just before the city's big derby, and tonight (Sunday) we witnessed difficult scenes that have no place in Israeli sports.
According to eyewitnesses at the scene, Hapoel Haifa fans who left the basketball team's game against Hapoel Jerusalem at the Sports Hall in Rommah were unexpectedly attacked by dozens of Maccabi Haifa fans who were waiting for them there.
Large police forces were called to the scene and seven fans were arrested, and required medical attention.
The background for the violent events are, as I recall, an incident of equipment theft by Hapoel Haifa fans for Maccabi Haifa fans, and ahead of the city's football derby.
As a reminder, the Maccabi Haifa fans' organization is boycotting the match at Teddy against Beitar due to what they claim is violence by the Jerusalem police.
