At the marathon in New York, Sharon Lokedi caused a surprise: the 28-year-old Kenyan made her debut over the marathon distance and ran straight to victory.

Lokedi finished in 2:23:23 ahead of Israel's Lonah Salpeter and Ethiopia's World Champion Gotytom Gebreslase.

Two-time 5000m World Champion Hellen Obiri (Kenya) finished sixth in her first marathon in 2:25:49.

In the men's race, Kenyan Evans Chebet lived up to his role as favourite.

The 33-year-old finished first in Central Park in 2:08:41 hours.

In April he had already won the marathon in Boston.

He was one of the few runners in the world to achieve this double success in one year.

As in 2018, Shura Kitata from Ethiopia came second in 2:08:54 hours ahead of Dutch Olympic silver medalist Abdi Nageeye (2:10:31 hours).

Do Nascimiento has to give up

The Brazilian Daniel do Nascimiento, who had been in the lead for three quarters of the race but then collapsed, caused a moment of shock.

In unusually warm temperatures of more than 20 degrees Celsius, Do Nascimiento had set a high pace and was even aiming for a new record before he had to retire from the race.

Officials later said about his health that Nascimiento was "okay".

A total of around 50,000 participants took part in the marathon through New York.

The run thus reached the same magnitude as before the corona pandemic.
