But now Sadio Mané's injury debacle takes a surprising turn.
Despite his injury, Senegal national coach Aliou Cissé has nominated the Bayern striker for his World Cup squad.
It had already been speculated in advance whether Senegal would take Mané to Qatar with him when he was injured.
Those responsible hope that their star striker will be able to get back into the game by the third group game at the latest.

that a World Cup without Mané is unimaginable for the Senegalese team.

Mané had already demonstrated at the Africa Cup of Nations how much it takes to stand on the pitch for his country.
After a collision with the Cape Verde goalkeeper, he briefly fell unconscious.
Nevertheless, the Bayern star continued to play and a little later scored the opening goal for his team.
In retrospect, it turned out that Mané had actually suffered a concussion.
33 goals for the Senegal national team
Mané has scored 33 goals and provided 20 assists in 92 international appearances.
At the Africa Cup of Nations in February, he led Senegal to their first triumph ever.
So now he still gets the chance to represent his country at the World Cup.
It remains to be hoped that Mané will actually be able to take an active part in the game.
In any case, Nagelsmann does not want to make any firm statements for the Bayern squad: "We will do another follow-up check in ten days and see how the healing process is and then further decisions will be made," said the coach on Friday.
