“After another setback in training on Sunday, everyone involved has tried everything possible over the past few days to make my participation in the World Championships possible.

However, with my injured ankle it wasn't enough for the World Cup," Reus wrote on Instagram.

He also expressed special thanks to the national coach.

"I would also like to thank national coach Hansi Flick and team doctor Jochen Hahne, who also tried everything!

In the end, however, we all had to accept that it wasn't enough," says the 48-time national player, who now has to accept the starting position.

"A big dream of mine has been shattered," he added.

Only at the catastrophic 2018 World Cup was the native of Dortmund, it will probably have been his last World Cup.

Not only Reus and Hummels were disappointed on Friday afternoon.

Other players such as Inter full-back Robin Gosens, Leipzig's Benjamin Henrichs or Leeds professional Robin Koch would certainly have wanted a place in the 26-man squad.
