One week before the start of the World Cup, national team captain Manuel Neuer confirmed that the German national soccer players will also stand up for their values and the protection of human rights in Qatar.

"In close consultation with the DFB, the team, the team council and those responsible, we will see how far we can go.

We're thinking about it and will represent our values," Neuer announced after his FC Bayern Munich's last Bundesliga game at FC Schalke 04 on Saturday evening in the ZDF sports studio.

The 36-year-old also considers the controversial One Love captain's armband, with which he will lead the DFB team to the World Cup games, to be a significant contribution.

"The strong sign is that we are not the only nation wearing this one-love bandage," said Neuer.

It is a joint action of the DFB with football associations of other nations.

After the campaign was announced, however, there was also massive criticism of the color of the One Love bandage because it did not represent the rainbow flag.

Neuer wore such a captain's armband at the European Championships a year ago.

Neuer also repeated his clear criticism of the homophobic statements made by Qatar's World Cup ambassador, Khalid Salman.

“This is an absolute blunder.

It bothers me, it annoys me, it's unacceptable.

It's sad that someone like that is a World Cup ambassador," said Neuer.

In the ZDF documentary "Geheimsache Qatar", former Qatar international Salman described being gay as "mental damage".

National coach Hansi Flick gathers his 26 World Cup players on Sunday evening in Frankfurt am Main.

On Monday, the DFB entourage will fly from there to a short training camp in Muscat with a friendly against hosts Oman on Wednesday.

A day later we continue to the World Cup country Qatar.

The German team will play their first group game on November 23 against Japan.
