And suddenly the jersey with the “C” was hanging on Marcus Weber: The native of Garmisch-Partenkirch led the German national ice hockey team as captain in the third game to triumph at the Deutschland Cup.

Krefeld –

When Marcus Weber enters the changing room in Krefeld on Sunday, his eyes widen.

He can't quite believe what he sees there.

Because there is something on his jersey that wasn't there before: the "C" for the captain.

"I don't know exactly how that happened either.

It just hung there,” says Weber with a laugh.

He slipped it on, defeated Slovakia in the final game with his teammates from the German national ice hockey team and then raised the glass trophy for the triumph in the Deutschland Cup.

It was a great honor for me to wear the "C" for Germany."

"It wasn't that easy," says Weber.

He doesn't just mean the games against Denmark (3:2 aet), Austria (3:0) and Slovakia (3:0), but above all the weight of the trophy.

At the same time, he points out his lack of experience in this profession.

"I haven't won that many trophies before," admits the man from Garmisch-Partenkirch with a smile.

But now one with the DEB team as captain.

Weber appreciates this recognition and emphasizes: "It was a great honor for me to wear the "C" for Germany."

Weber/Zitterbart - duo with SCR past

He not only paid back the trust placed in him by national coach Toni Söderholm with words, but also with deeds.

Weber was on the ice in all three games and only conceded two goals with the team.

He is correspondingly satisfied with his personal appearances.

"I think I was robust on the defensive as required, fought good tackles and even playing with a man down was decent." He draws the same conclusion for the performance of the entire team.

"It wasn't all perfect, but how is that supposed to work with one or two training sessions, new tactics and new teammates?" New is the apt word when it comes to the DEB squad.

Söderholm had deliberately let some regulars pause, but nominated many young players.

That's why Weber, at 30, was also one of the oldest in the team.

But that doesn't mean that he now had to play the alphabet.

"The boys all play bigger roles in their teams, so you don't have to anticipate much or answer questions from them." On the other hand, there was a lively exchange, and Weber also asked his younger colleagues how things were going in Munich or Cologne, for example.

And Dusseldorf.

Because Luca Zitterbart is now playing at DEG.

The 24-year-old and Weber have a common past at SCR, and now also at DEB.

"That was funny.

I also showed Luca the Tagblatt article beforehand.

And then we really play together.” It worked perfectly, Weber and Zitterbart provided defensive stability in the DEB team.

"I do not know,

whether the few games at the SCR gave us the unbeatable advantage, but it worked out well and was a lot of fun.

We can gladly repeat.”

Weber regrets the low number of spectators in Krefeld

The scenery in the stands in Krefeld was less convincing.

All in all, only around 8,000 fans watched the German games live on site.

On Thursday against Denmark, not even 1000 spectators got a ticket, less than the average of the SCR in the Oberliga.

"It was really skinny.

I thought Krefeld was an ice hockey city," says Weber.

But on Saturday and Sunday it "felt" more than the 3310 and 3854 fans.

"It's a shame, because we've done good advertising for German ice hockey again.

We can not Do more."

Weber is now not allowed to do anything – at least for two days.

He relaxes briefly at home before returning to Nuremberg.
