FIFA President Gianni Infantino issued a request for a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine for the duration of the 2022 World Cup, and called on both sides to use the tournament as a "trigger" to try and achieve a political solution. In a conversation he conducted today (Tuesday) with the leaders of the G20 group, the world's largest economies In Indonesia, Infantino said the month-long World Cup, which begins in Qatar on Sunday, offers a unique platform for peace.
"I appeal to all of you to think about a temporary ceasefire for a month for the duration of the World Cup, or at least the implementation of some humanitarian corridors or anything that can lead to the resumption of dialogue as a first step towards peace," Infantino said.
"You are the leaders of the world, you have the ability to influence the course of history. Soccer and the World Cup offer you and the world a unique platform of unity and peace throughout the world."

The World Cup, which began on Sunday, will continue until December 18 in Qatar, which is the first country in the Middle East to host the tournament.
Russia reached the quarterfinals of the last World Cup in 2018, but was banned from that tournament because of its invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine came close to qualifying for Qatar but lost to Wales in the play-off last June.
