A dramatic accident at sea occurred on the arrival of the winner of the Route du Rhum, Charles Caudrelier, this Wednesday in Guadeloupe.

Two men lost their lives, including the Niçois François Naveilhan.

The latter was with eleven other passengers on a support boat which, caught in a strong swell, capsized less than a mile from the finish line.

All the passengers were quickly rescued by the French Navy, but two of them were taken care of in cardiorespiratory arrest and unfortunately could not be resuscitated.

Aged 35, François Naveilhan had worked at OGC Nice for eight years as project manager, responsible for marketing the club's media, then customer manager.

“OGC Nice had the immense sadness to learn of the death of François Naveilhan, a former collaborator of the Club”

, tweeted the Nice club.

Since 2020, he had been employed as a sales manager in Lorient, Brittany, in a company which organizes sporting events, including the mythical transatlantic on which he had been assigned as well as his collaborator, Axel Picot, 38, who also died in the accident.

All our thoughts go out to the families of our two employees and to all of our deeply bruised teams,”

said Hervé Favre, president of Oc Sport Pen Duick, in a press release.

The VIP star followed, alongside other boats, the arrival of the winner Charles Caudrelier (Maxi Edmond de Rothschild), who crossed the line at 5:02 a.m. local time (10:02 a.m. Paris time), after 6 days 19 hours and 47 minutes at sea.

The public prosecutor of Pointe-à-Pitre, Patrick Desjardins, indicated in a press release that a judicial investigation had been opened for involuntary homicides.

“The hypothesis of a collision with another vessel seems at this stage to be able to be excluded even if all the hypotheses continue to be verified given the presence on the water of a very large number of boats

. »

The investigations were entrusted to the services of the maritime gendarmerie in co-referral with the nautical brigade of the gendarmerie of Guadeloupe, reinforced by the police services of the Territorial Directorate of the National Police of Guadeloupe (DTPN 971).
