(S+) Soccer World Cup in Qatar: Will the German team stand up for human rights?

2022-11-18T05:05:58.629Z

Probably the most controversial World Cup in football history begins on Sunday. Despite allegations of corruption and human rights violations in host country Qatar. Fifa bans political messages. Will the DFB-Elf still set an example?

Despite years of criticism of the host country, the World Cup kicks off in Qatar on Sunday.

Peter Ahrens from the SPIEGEL sports department will be there to observe the German team.

And this year it will be about more than athletic performance.

The surrounding circumstances will play a bigger role than in any other tournament so far.

"The German team will comment in some way on the controversies surrounding Qatar," Ahrens assured SPIEGEL Daily.

'But don't expect too much.

In the end, that's not her job.

But the German Football Association will have an obligation.«

In this episode, Ahrens also talks about his own role as a reporter and his expectations: "Actually, you can only see football ambivalently.

But this World Cup will be the highlight.

Qatar is not football's fall from grace, it's the logical goal." You can hear in the podcast why Fifa will still not impose sanctions against possible political messages if a team dares.
