Many feared it, now there is certainty: Sadio Mané will miss the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The FCB star has to undergo an operation.

The star from FC Bayern cannot take part in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after all.

This was announced by the Senegalese Football Association on Twitter on Saturday evening.

Mané is therefore not in the squad for the Winter World Cup.

Senegal is missing one of the most important players in the squad.

Mané suffered a fibula head injury in Bayern's game against Werder Bremen (6-1).

The federation were still keen to take the superstar to the World Cup, hoping that Mané could intervene in the group stage.

But that won't work.

Worse still, Mané even has to undergo surgery.

FC Bayern and the Senegalese Football Association pulled out all the stops to make Mané's World Cup dream come true.

The best medical professionals were rounded up to cure the injury as quickly as possible.

"We sent a doctor from the national team, he was in Munich all day yesterday and then in Austria for further examinations," said Senegal national coach Aliou Cissé (46) on Friday.

“The good news is that there is no surgery.

That's very good news," Cissé was sure.

Now there is sad certainty: With Mané, one of the pillars is missing in Qatar.

With 93 appearances, he is the third-best player in the country.

The controversial tournament in Qatar is only the third appearance of the West African country at the World Cup.

On their debut in 2002, the “Lions de la Teranga” duped the reigning world champions France in the group phase and only failed in the quarter-finals after a golden goal against Turkey.

At the World Cup in Russia four years ago, Senegal made a comeback.

The team around defensive edge Kalidou Koulibaly and star striker Sadio Mané was considered the golden generation.

With just one loss and four points, Senegal were bitterly eliminated in the group stage by Poland, Japan and Colombia in Russia.

At the 2022 World Cup, Senegal is in Group A with hosts Qatar, Ecuador and the Netherlands (schedule for the 2022 World Cup).

The lions must now finally do without their superstar.

It could have been Mané's last chance for a second World Cup appearance.

In four years he will be 34 years old.
