Mick Schumacher has to give up his minimal hopes for a regular Formula 1 cockpit for next year at Williams.
Williams' preferred candidate Logan Sargeant finished fifth in his last Formula 2 race on Sunday in Abu Dhabi.
The American finished fourth overall and, with the necessary points, met the requirements for a Formula 1 driver's license.
Williams had promised Sargeant the regular cockpit for 2023 alongside Alex Albon if he should get his 'driver's license' for the motorsport premier class.
The 21-year-old has now succeeded.
He is the first US driver in Formula 1 since 2015.
"Now we have to see if we can do it"
After leaving Haas after two years, Mick Schumacher was considered a possible candidate for a Williams cockpit.
A job at Mercedes as a substitute driver could now be possible for the 23-year-old.
"Mick is someone who has always been very important to us, because of Michael and the whole Schumacher family," said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff in advance.
"I think he deserves a place in Formula 1 and now we have to see if we can do that," he told Sky on Friday.
Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher drove his last three career years for Mercedes.
In 2012 he finally resigned.
At Haas, Mick Schumacher will be replaced by Nico Hülkenberg, who will be the only German in the field.
Sebastian Vettel ends his career, Fernando Alonso takes his place at Aston Martin.
