Demonstrators: "Shame on Qatar, shame on Fifa"
Several dozen LGBTQ+ activists protested for gay rights outside the Qatari Embassy in London on Saturday.
The World Cup kicks off in Qatar on Sunday.
The demonstrators chanted, criticizing the organizers of the World Cup for hosting the tournament in a country that does not recognize LGBTQ+ rights.
Peter Tatchell, LGBTQ+ activist: »We are here to protest against the dictatorship in Qatar. We send our love and solidarity to Qatari women, LGBTs and migrant workers. We are on your side. We also want to send a message to Fifa: stop collaborating with the sexist, homophobic and racist police state.”
Same-sex relationships in Qatar are punishable by up to three years in prison.
The Qatari organizers of the soccer World Cup have warned visitors against public displays of love.
At the same time, they emphasize that everyone is welcome at the event, regardless of their sexual orientation or background.
Qatar has also faced allegations of mistreatment of stadium construction workers.
In the small Gulf state, the organizers are now trying to draw attention to the pitch.
Patrick Simon, Canadian living in Qatar: »Yes, there were some problems with the set-up. But I think once the tournament starts everything will be fine.«
Thousands of security forces prepare to control the crowds ahead of the opening game.
A challenge: More than 1.2 million visitors are expected - more than a third of Qatar's population.
The host country begins the World Cup against Ecuador on Sunday.
