Manuel Neuer will not wear the "One Love" bandage after all.

Criticism therefore hails for the DFB.

ZDF presenter Jochen Beyer also finds clear words.

Munich – After the opening game of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the sporty side quickly faded into the background.

Much bigger than the discussions about the footballing deficits that Qatar revealed against Ecuador (0:2) were the atmosphere in the stadium.

So there was a lot of criticism and ridicule for the host country and the numerous fans who left the stadium early.

World Cup 2022: FIFA first collects the beer served in the stadium and then the "One Love" captain's armband

Before that, another topic caused a great outcry: beer.

While alcohol is not entirely banned in Qatar, it is served in very limited quantities.

Originally, FIFA wanted alcoholic beer to be sold in selected areas of the stadium.

However, this plan was canceled at short notice at the insistence of the host country.

Beer, wine and spirits are now only available in the VIP boxes.

Now FIFA, around its President Gianni Infantino, was probably being fooled again by Qatar.

Because some nations, including Germany, the Netherlands and England, were actually planning to wear a special "One Love" captain's armband as a symbol of equality and freedom of expression.

But FIFA also conceded this plan with the threat of yellow cards and point deductions.

World Cup 2022: ZDF presenter Jochen Beyer and other fans accuse the DFB of a lack of backbone

The buckling of the World Cup participants is not well received by football fans, as reported by tz.de.

"A sign that you only set if you don't have to fear any consequences is not a sign," wrote ZDF commentator Jochen Beyer, who got to the bottom of the grievances in Qatar with his documentary "Geheimsache Qatar" on Twitter.

Most people on Facebook and Twitter accuse the DFB of a lack of backbone.

As soon as FIFA announced stricter penalties for wearing the bandage, the DFB and the other national associations would have backed down.

Wearing the armband, even if the respective captain was given a yellow card for it, would be seen by many as an extremely strong sign.

After FIFA announced yellow cards and point deductions, the DFB around captain Manuel Neuer decided not to wear the "One Love" armband.

World Cup 2022: are the countries setting an example in a different way?

Iran boycotts its own anthem

It remains to be seen with excitement whether a country will dare to send a clear signal in a different way in the fight for equality and freedom of expression during the further games.

In any case, the fans are initially disappointed that the countries are once again bowing to FIFA.

The Iran national team, meanwhile, decided not to sing the anthem in their first group game.

This is supposed to be a protest against the regime in their own country.
