The stoppage time in both halves was also remarkable: referee Claus added 14 minutes each.

While that was understandable in the first half due to the serious injury, there was actually no apparent reason for it in the second half - even if it was "only" ten minutes originally.

However, the use of the VAR increased this to 14 minutes.

The Iranian national team caused a stir before the game by not singing the national anthem.

Iranian television then interrupted the transmission.

There were no further protests.

England vs Iran: Iran national team does not sing anthem

Update from November 21, 1:58 p.m .:

First protest by the Iranian national team.

None of the players in the starting XI sing along to the national anthem.

The national anthem represents the Iranian regime.

In doing so, they remain silent about the insurgency movements in their home country.

Update from November 21, 1:55 p.m

.: The teams are running in.

Everything is set for the opening game in Group B. At first glance, the Khalifa International Stadium seems to be packed.

England vs Iran: Will there be a protest in the 22nd minute?

Update from November 21, 1:39 p.m

.: The 22nd minute could be particularly explosive: Apparently, fans from England, where many people with Persian roots live, and Iran have agreed to chant Mahsa Amini’s name.

This is the 22-year-old woman of Kurdish descent who died - and whose fall triggered the ongoing mass protests.

Update from November 21, 1:34 p.m .:

The lineups are there.

In England, it is not Alexander-Arnold who defends in the back right, but Kieran Trippier.

However, that was to be expected, as was the rest of the lineup.

From a German point of view, there is a big surprise in Iran: Leverkusen star Azmoun has to sit on the bench first.

Munich

– The starting signal for the 2022 World Cup has fallen.

Hosts Qatar suffered a 2-0 defeat by Ecuador on Sunday.

In the second World Cup game, England and Iran meet in Group B.

For Gareth Southgate's team, the Iran game should be the start of a World Cup that should end with the title.

The game will be played at the Khalifa International Stadium in ar-Rayyan, west of Qatar's capital, Doha.

The venue is the de facto national stadium of the Qatar national football team and the only stadium that was not built specifically for the World Cup.

However, the arena was completely renovated between 2014 and 2017 and now has a capacity of 40,000 spectators.

England vs Iran live today: Politics determines the game

England are the big favorites in Group B. Alongside the Three Lions and Iran, the USA and Wales are fighting for a place in the round of 16.

In addition to the sports, it will also be exciting to see how the English behave within the scope of their protest possibilities.

Originally it was planned that England captain Harry Kane would appear with the "One Love" captain's armband.

A few hours before the start of the game, however, this was banned by FIFA.

Even with group opponents Iran, not only the sporting is in the foreground.

Iran's participation was in the stars for a long time due to human rights violations there.

The local population expects the national team to send out a political signal against the regime in Iran.

In terms of sport, Leverkusen striker Sardar Azmoun is the main focus of national coach Carlos Queiroz's team.

What's in today?

How is Iran doing against the favourites?
