Sport should have made the headlines at the World Cup on Monday – but politics were once again the focus of discussions.
The dispute between eight European associations and the world association Fifa about wearing the "One Love" captain's armband escalated.
These are the international press reviews:
England
The Athletic:
"The U-turn in the 'One Love' armband debate is a reminder that men's football will not stand up for LGBT people."
The Times:
"The bow to Fifa in the 'One Love' debate is a reflection of the FA's pathetic principles."
Mirror:
"The FA deserve criticism for the pathetic turn on armbands, but shameful Fifa deserves contempt."
France
L'Equipe:
»Fifa has won its confrontation with seven European countries that have given up the inclusive »One Love« anti-discrimination armband.
And a fight against Uefa, which supported this initiative.
This story will leave its mark.«
Italy
Gazeztta dello Sport:
"Various associations wrote to Fifa in September asking for clarification on the possibility of wearing armbands, but received no reply.
She arrived today.
And when you consider that the pads were used without much fanfare in the Nations League, one can only regret a missed opportunity.«
Germany
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung:
»(...) One day before the England game, whose captain Harry Kane wanted to wear the model along with other Europeans, Fifa announced: Anyone who wears »One Love« on their arm risks »sporting sanctions«.
DFB President Neuendorf did not specify whether these would go beyond a yellow card, a point deduction was in the room, as it was said on Monday.
(...) How happily Fifa allowed the Europeans to be ambushed is shown by the "offer" that they made in return: in the style of the house, with all their cynical patronage, they are now offering a bandage that, according to Fifa, only was intended from the quarter-finals onwards, may be worn immediately.
Caption: No discrimination.
So Infantino is not concerned with the message.
It's about power.

»Our country owes many special moments to the German national team.
The miracle of Bern in 1954, the reunification title in 1990 or the historic 7-1 win over Brazil in 2014. November 21, 2022 will also go down in history.
As a day of shame.
It is the day on which the DFB and national team gambled away a lot of their credibility before the eyes of the whole world.
Indeed, the nation's knickers are too cowardly to wear a captain's armband that says "One Love."
