Germany screwed up the start of the World Cup against Japan.

Jamal Musiala can hardly be stopped with his dribbles, Serge Gnabry misses the best chances.

The individual criticism.

Ar-Rayyan – Shock for the DFB team at the 2022 World Cup: After a true festival of opportunities, Germany surprisingly lost 1: 2 (1: 0) to outsiders Japan at the start of Group E.

This means that the team of national coach Hansi Flick is already threatened with the end this Sunday against Spain (8 p.m.) at the World Cup in Qatar (November 20 to December 18).

World Cup 2022: Germany fails against Japan – weak second half of the DFB-Elf

In the Khalifa International Stadium in Ar-Rayyan near Doha, the German national team literally ran into the first half and was overwhelmingly superior until the break.

An offside hit by the otherwise pale Kai Havertz (45th minute +4) was disallowed for offside.

A correct decision.

Ilkay Gündogan (33') put the DFB team ahead with a penalty kick, Freiburg's Ritsu Doan (76') and Bochum's Takuma Asano (83') turned the game around.

In defense Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund) turned out to be a weak point, offensively Jamal Musiala (FC Bayern) took a lot of dribbles - ultimately in vain.

Munich's Serge Gnarby didn't get the best chances in goal, veteran Thomas Müller didn't have a decisive action.

Manuel Neuer

The captain swore in his team-mates loudly before kick-off.

He prevented the equalizer after almost 75 minutes with a world-class reflex.

A little later at 1:1 without a chance.

As in Dortmund, the defensive edge was also allowed to play as a right-back in the Khalifa Stadium – and it knew how to please.

He was consistent defensively, sometimes the set-up wasn't right.

Especially in the second half, his side often became dangerous.

Antonio Ruediger

In the middle of the first half he just pushed opponent Kubo aside with his body without any effort.

The defense chief's body language signaled to the Japanese at all times: There's no getting past me today.

Rüdiger performed with this sovereignty throughout the season.

Nico Schlotterbeck

Solid performance in his World Championship debut.

The young man from Dortmund approached his task with the necessary seriousness.

Nevertheless, one always had the feeling that he could make a capital mistake.

David Raum

In order to be able to provide real danger via the left flank, the ball processing from space was too weak.

The playground equipment often jumped too far from his foot.

Still trying.

Rear in some action too unfocused.

grade: 4

Joshua Kimmich

With his typical chip ball, he made sure of the later penalty after a foul play on space.

Kimmich was omnipresent on the pitch and set the pace for the balance between defense and offense, albeit with a dangerous loss of possession in the first half.

Ilkay Gundogan

Surprisingly, the midfielder was preferred to Leon Goretzka.

In the execution of his actions Gündogan was often too slow, the toxicity in a duel was missing.

After all, he stayed cool when he converted the penalty kick, offensively stronger.

Leon Goretzka

Serge Gnabry

Gnabry seemed a bit isolated on the right wing.

Although he kept looking for his way inside, the angle at the end of the goal was mostly too sharp.

When he had actions, it became dangerous for Japan.

grade: 4

Thomas Müller

Usual running and loud appearance of the Munich.

Nevertheless, the compulsory break of several weeks due to hip problems was noticeable.

Jamal Musiala

The great hope of the national team found it difficult to create his brilliant moments.

He was frequently man-marked by two or three Japanese.

However, Musiala is unstoppable in dribbling and scored goals, which, however, did not find their way to the finish line.

Kai Havertz

Apart from his offside goal, there wasn't much to see from Havertz as a striker.

He still has to get used to his new World Cup role.
