The Spanish team beat Costa Rica in their first match in the World Cup in Qatar at the start of the match.

The coach of Costa Rica, Spain's rival this Wednesday in the debut of both teams in the World Cup in Qatar, has been experimenting with feelings and football for more than half a century.

He qualified Ecuador for the 2006 World Cup and Honduras for the 2014 World Cup, before he called it Costa Rica a year ago, with the chimerical objective of straightening out a lopsided classification.

He did it in the playoffs and arrives in Qatar happy.

"Living in a country without an army is absolute peace of mind," he says.

Los retoques de Luis Enrique (II)

Centrocampistas. En esta línea es en la que menos sorpresas vemos, compuesta íntegramente por los jugadores del Barcelona. Busquets de eje y palanca que mueve el mundo escoltado unos metros por delante por Pedri, que es el que pone la magia, y Gavi, que añade trabajo. Koke y Carlos Soler podrán contar también con sus minutos en el caso de que Luis Enrique mantenga esta disposición.

Delantera. España empezará jugando sin un delantero centro, idea que ya popularizó Del Bosque con Cesc con la selección o Guardiola con Messi en el Barcelona. En este caso, el protagonismo recae en Asensio, que actuará de falso nueve como ya hiciera en el anterior duelo amistoso ante Jordania. El damnificado es Morata, el único 9 puro de la selección, que partirá desde el banquillo. Por las bandas, el seleccionador se ha decantado por Ferran Torres (que no está teniendo demasiado protagonismo con el Barcelona) pero con el que cuenta desde hace tiempo, además de Dani Olmo, de quien siempre tiene elogios en la boca. Como suplentes y posibles amenazas hay un overbooking con Ansu Fati, Sarabia, Nico Williams y Yeremi Pino.

Los retoques de Luis Enrique

Intervencionista como es, Luis Enrique ha dejado alguna sorpresa en la primera alineación en el Mundial de Qatar. Siempre pendiente de las virtudes del rival pero más preocupado en imponer su idea, es complicado que el seleccionador repita onces. Frente a Costa Rica ha hecho algún retoque…

Portería. Aquí no hay sorpresa alguna, pues se da por hecho que Unai Simón será el actor principal mientras que Robert Sánchez y David Raya serán los secundarios.

Defensa. Aquí vemos alguna que otra sorpresa. Seguramente, con la intención de tener una salida desde la raíz fluida, Luis Enrique sitúa a Rodri (mediocentro) como central.  El jugador descuenta líneas de presión con el pase y se presupone que los costarricenses no pondrán en demasiados apuros a la selección con sus ataques o, al menos, no cargarán el área rival de jugadores. La inclusión de Rodri, que tampoco sería de extrañar que en ocasiones adelante su posición para obtener superioridades, hace que Carvajal -que está un poco tocado- se quede en el banquillo porque es un lateral mucho más ofensivo que Azpilicueta, al final titular en la derecha. Así, España se asegura tener a un defensa más estático por la derecha porque ya se sabe que por la izquierda Alba se proyecta con facilidad. Junto a Rodri actuará Laporte, otro central con buena salida desde atrás, con buen pase para la composición. Pau Torres, central, aguardará a sus minutos en el banquillo.

Hora de graduarse para España

Llegó la hora de España, el momento de competir, que es el mínimo exigible para el grupo de Luis Enrique, convencido del hueso de los suyos. Los últimos eventos, Eurocopa y Liga de Naciones, acreditan el pulso de una selección de autor, Luis Enrique, pero el Mundial tiene mayor graduación. Como primer reto, Costa Rica. Ambas selecciones nunca se han medido en partido oficial.

Enfrente de Costa Rica, la España que subraya Luis Enrique, principal divisa de un grupo bien arropado en su figura. Un técnico decidido desde el primer día a coser un equipo que plasme su modelo. Nunca quiso limitarse a seleccionar a los mejores, sino a sus mejores. A falta de grandes solistas en el panorama español, el preparador asturiano se ha decantado por un formato en el que prevalezca lo colectivo, la cohesión del grupo. Para ello jamás le importó afiliar a un suplente o dar vidilla a la primera a cadetes como Ansu Fati o Gavi. Poco a poco, España ha definido su espinazo, con futbolistas como Unai Simón, Laporte, Busquets y Morata, a los que se ha sumado Pedri tras superar los problemas físicos del pasado curso.
