Germany starts against Japan in the World Cup.

Franz Beckenbauer will not travel to Qatar – in a rare interview, the Emperor reveals how he is doing.

Munich – Early Wednesday afternoon the time has come: Germany is playing the first game of the 2022 World Cup. In Al-Rayyan, the DFB-Elf meets Japan (schedule for the 2022 World Cup).

Hansi Flick could hardly receive more valuable advice for his first major tournament as national coach from anyone than the Kaiser himself – after all, Franz Beckenbauer brought the trophy home as a player and coach.

Franz Beckenbauer

Born: September 11, 1945 (age 77 years) in Munich, Germany

Height: 1.81 m

Stations as a player: FC Bayern Munich, New York Cosmos, Hamburger SV

Positions as coach: Germany, Olympique Marseille, FC Bayern Munich (interim coach)

But the Emperor holds back.

He has long since become a quiet connoisseur of football events.

Not much has been made public about his health in recent years.

In an interview with

Bunte

, the 77-year-old legend speaks out before the national team's first World Cup game (broadcast dates of the DFB team).

Of course, Beckenbauer is excited about the start of the German World Cup (here in the live ticker).

"But I will not go to Qatar.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for our team in front of the television," he says.

The last time he was in the stadium was a year ago.

"You know, it's pretty tiring.

Everyone asks me how I'm doing and I have to tell everyone the same thing."

Beckenbauer jokes: "People probably think he never lives long"

The Kaiser then speaks openly about his health: "I had what is known as an infarction in one eye.

Unfortunately, I can't see anything on the right.

I can handle that,” reports Beckenbauer.

"And I have to be careful with my heart," he adds.

He already had three bypasses in 2016, followed by the eye surgery in 2019.

But he hasn't lost his sense of humor yet.

He is currently receiving “a particularly large amount of autograph mail, which I am happy to answer.

People probably think he never lives long.

But I'll try to stay with you for a while longer," he jokes.

Beckenbauer withdraws from the public

Public appearances by the Kaiser will remain rare in the future.

Most recently, he showed up at the departure of the DFB women for the European Championship and wished the team every success during a visit.

Beckenbauer is not taking part in the current Qatar discussion - Joshua Kimmich could not escape the topic at the press conference before the Japan game, but was annoyed.
