Doha – A few minutes before the DFB-Elf's opening game at the 2022 World Cup against Japan (1: 2), Hansi Flick was asked again about the "One Love" armband, which FIFA had banned at short notice.
When asked whether the team had found an alternative to the bandage, the national coach said with a smile and somewhat conspiratorially: "Let's see".
Immediately before kick-off, the first eleven reacted to the FIFA decision with a clear gesture – and collectively covered their mouths.

Both nationally and internationally, the silent protest caused a great response.
In Germany, a larger campaign was apparently promised, but the national team was reaping praise for their protests abroad.
