At the World Cup in Qatar, female referees will referee games for the first time.

Doha – This has never happened before: Female referees are used for the first time in World Cup history.

FIFA nominated Stephanie Frappart, Salima Mukansanga and Yoshimi Yamashita for the finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The premiere is taking place in the Gulf State of all places, where women are massively discriminated against.

They were not used in the first week of the tournament (schedule for the 2022 World Cup).

Who are the three women anyway?

France's Stephanie Frappart is by far the best known to European football audiences.

The 38-year-old is used to making history: in 2019 she became the first woman to officiate a major international competitive game, the UEFA Supercup between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

In 2020 she was the first referee to referee a Champions League game.

Salima Mukansanga comes from Rwanda and also has experience in men's football.

She is a trained nurse and midwife and earlier this year became the first woman to officiate a game at the Africa Cup of Nations.

"I have loved refereeing since I was a child," she said in an interview with

.

"I never thought I would achieve that."

World Cup 2022: Referee Yamashita between man and machine

The third in the group of referees is Yoshimi Yamashita.

The 38-year-old has eclipsed her male counterparts - she is the only referee from Japan at the World Cup.

She wants to "apply the rules like a machine" and "communicate her decisions as humanly as possible," she recently explained.

In addition to the three main referees, three other linesmen are used: Neuza Back (Brazil), Karen Diaz Medina (Mexico) and Kathryn Nesbitt (USA).

Incidentally, the only German referee at the World Cup is Daniel Siebert.
