ICE HOCKEY HIGHER LEAGUE "Top performance" by the Löwen: 4:2 victory in the derby at SC Riessersee
Garmisch-Partenkirchen/Bad Tölz – Fists don't always have to fly to make a derby competitive and exciting.
On Friday evening it almost seemed as if the two teams wanted to clarify the old rivalry in a sporty way on the ice: a dispute that was a bit at odds in places, always rousing and characterized by the offensive departments of both teams remained exciting until the final phase.
In the end, the Tölzer threw up their arms and celebrated the 4-2 win over arch-rivals SC Riessersee.
Tölz wins the game of games
Statistics, table places, favorite roles - all waste.
Only when the game is played is the derby winner known.
While the lions were ahead of the Garmisch-Partenkirchners in the Oberliga table in the first season comparison, this time it was the other way round: SC Riessersee received sixth-placed Toelzer in fourth place.
And yet it was the hosts who had to chase after a Tölzer lead for almost the entire game – and in the end lost out to the better team.
"It was a top performance from the whole team," said coach Ryan Foster.
"Starting with goalkeeper Josef Hölzl, through the defenders to the strikers, a deserved win."
With storm and calm
Garmisch initially determined the game.
Handed it over peacefully to the guests after eight minutes.
"We were already strong in the first third and could have led higher," says Foster.
Ludwig Nirschl had the first big chance on the bat when he went it alone, a little later he coldly closed Nick Huard's clever pass to make it 1-0 after Erik Gollenbeck and Oliver Ott had missed good opportunities.
And the lions defended strongly.
Not least because of new signing Sören Sturm, who increased the lead to 2-1 with the Blueliner after Garmisch equalized.
But also because the veteran brought calm.
But then it got restless: In the final third, the game continued to go back and forth, Robin Soudek cleared Hölzl in an attack and drove into the goal together with the Tölz keeper.
From the background, Kevin Slezak - ex-Tölzer - threw the disc unimpressed into the net.
The referees saw no hindrance to the goalkeeper and gave the goal.
2:2, all open.
Compensatory justice
But the lions remained calm, kept their nerves - even in the decisive phase: The lion's top scorer Nirschl initiated it by moving to the penalty box.
Advantage Riessersee, the second-best power play team in the Oberliga against Tölz, who recently outnumbered the emerging Tölz.
Winners: the lions, who did absolutely nothing, defended completely confidently and for their part forced Garmisch to take a penalty.
A time-out, final instructions from Foster, and Tyler Ward coldly executed Nirschl's cross pass for the third Tölzer lead.
Compensatory justice: A controversial action against Alexander Höller, which preceded the goal, was not punished.
Revenge succeeded
And it stayed that way because Garmisch didn't create any additional pressure in the end - not even when Mike Boehm from Tölzer left the Garmisch goal prematurely in favor of a field player.
Instead, Philipp Schlager grabbed the disc, passed to Nirschl, who hit the empty goal, 4-2 victory in the game of games, revenge for the home defeat and a good starting position for the small derby against Peiting on Sunday.
