The Costa Rica national team overturned expectations by defeating its Japanese counterpart with a goal without a response, in the second round of the first round of the FIFA World Cup finals, in the match that was held at Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium in the Qatari capital, Doha, for Group E.

Costa Rica raised its score to 3 points, to be equal with the teams of second Japan and Spain, the leaders with the same balance temporarily, pending the match between Spain and Germany, which will be held later today in the framework of the second round, noting that the German team comes in fourth place without points before the aforementioned match.

The first quarter of an hour witnessed pressure for the Japanese team, after which the Costa Rican team began to enter the atmosphere of the match, and extended towards Japan, which is relatively better in terms of attack, but without its attempts being translated into goals, so the first half ended with a negative result.

With the start of the second half, Japan tightened its control over the course of the game, so there was an opportunity to score by Hidemasa Morita, who aimed a powerful ball that was blocked by the goalkeeper, followed minutes later by Takuma Asano's header, but the goalkeeper returned and removed it from his own net, and contrary to what was expected, Costa Rica overturned expectations and scored against its Japanese opponent with a goal. Surprisingly, in the 81st minute, Kisher Fuller scored it, and the remaining time of the match and stoppage time did not help the Japanese team to adjust the score, so the match ended with Costa Rica winning 1-0.

Japan beat Germany with two goals to one, while Costa Rica lost to Spain by seven unanswered goals in the first round.
