Qatar — A tragic death occurred at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on Friday.

A Wales national team fan who traveled to Doha for the tournament has died aged 62.

The Welsh Football Association confirmed this in a post on Twitter on Saturday afternoon.

According to the BBC, the dead man is a 62-year-old man from the Pembrokshire region.

The fan had flown to Qatar with his son and several friends.

The Welshman is said to have missed the second group game between Wales and Iran on Friday morning (schedule for the 2022 World Cup) because he felt unwell.

This is reported by Paul Corkery of the BBC's Fan Embassy Wales fan club.

He asked the other members of the tour group to go to the game at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium without him.

Before the game in Group B, there were again emotional scenes in the stands during Iran's national anthem.

"They came back and he wasn't very well, so they took him to the hospital and unfortunately he didn't survive," Corkery said.

As the BBC further reports, the 62-year-old fan is said to have died of natural causes.

Commenting on the incident, Noel Mooney, the chief executive of the Football Association of Wales, wrote on Twitter: "So sorry to hear that one of our supporters has passed away here... Our condolences go to the family and of course we are here to support them where whenever we can.”
