A few hours after the publication the usual flag with the symbol was restored in the Twitter banner and the posts on Facebook and Instagram and the changed flag was removed.
"We wanted to show our support for women in Iran with our graphics for 24 hours," the federation said.
Association spokesman Neil Botha did not say whether the original decision was approved by president Cindy Farlow Cohn, the former national team player.
"It was an internal organizational decision," he said.
"I'm not going to get into who knew and who didn't."
National team defender Walker Zimmerman said that the American players were not aware of the matter: "We didn't know anything, but we support women's rights. We are focused on the game, also on the sports side."

The short absence of the symbol of the Islamic Republic came in the wake of the demonstrations that have been taking place in recent months against the Iranian government following the death on September 16 of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the country's morality police, when at least 450 more people have been killed and over 18,000 have been arrested since then .
Tehran also restricts access to the media and has arrested more than 63 reporters and photographers since the protests began.
