With the 1-1 draw against Spain, the German national team has progress to the round of 16 at the World Cup in Qatar in their own hands.
In the last group game on Thursday (8 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de, TV: ARD, MagentaTV) against Costa Rica, the team of national coach Hansi Flick cannot afford a draw or a defeat, otherwise the preliminary round is perfect.
There are different constellations for a win, depending on the outcome of the parallel game between Spain and Japan.
The easiest variant would be a Spanish win against Japan.
In this case, Spain would have seven points, Germany, second in Group E, four - that would be enough against Costa Rica and Japan (three each).
Mathematically, Germany even has the progress in its own hands, but the DFB-Elf would have to win by at least eight goals.
In this case, the result in the parallel game would not matter.
The initial situation at a glance:
Germany
(1 point, 2:3 goals) progresses...
in a win against Costa Rica if Spain wins against Japan.
in a win by at least two goals if Spain and Japan are drawn.
a win by one goal difference when Spain and Japan draw and Japan have then scored fewer goals overall.
on a win if Spain lose to Japan and Germany catch up on goal difference, which is currently eight goals behind Spain.
So every own victory with a difference of at least eight goals is enough.
Spain (4 points, 8:1 goals) advances...
in a win or draw against Japan.
in a loss to Japan if Costa Rica draws against Germany.
in a defeat against Japan, if Germany wins against Costa Rica, but does not make up the current goal difference of eight goals.
If Spain and
Germany
have the same overall goal difference in this case, the fair play ranking will decide first and then the draw of lots.
Japan (3 points, 2:2 goals) progresses...
in a win against Spain.
in a draw against Spain if Costa Rica and Germany also draw.
in a draw against Spain, if Germany wins against Costa Rica by one goal and ends up scoring at most the same number of goals as Japan.
Costa Rica (3 points, 1:7 goals) progresses...
in a win against Germany.
in a draw against Germany if Spain wins against Japan.
In the event of a tie in Qatar, the goal difference from all games will decide first, then the number of goals scored in all group games – and only then the direct comparison.
If all else fails, the fair play rating will be used.
As the final instance, the lot decides.
