Thanks to a 2-0 (0-0) win against Uruguay, Portugal has reached the World Cup round of 16 early.

Bruno Fernandes scored both goals.

First out of the game (54th minute), then by hand penalty (90th + 3rd).

Portugal have six points after two wins, while Uruguay are struggling to advance in Group H.

Going into the third day of play, the South Americans are fourth with one point.

Ghana are second with three points after beating South Korea.

On Friday (4pm) Uruguay, who have not yet scored in these World Cup finals, will meet Ghana.

At the same time, Portugal and South Korea play against each other.

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo provided the first highlight of the game when he shouldered a high ball in the penalty area to William Carvalho, whose volley went over the goal (3').

Little came from Uruguay, the offensive - this time without Luis Suárez in the starting XI - did not get going.

Instead, only Portugal played, but didn't create any clear chances either.

In the 18th minute, Ronaldo tried a direct free kick, but was denied by the wall.

At that time it was Ronaldo's 53rd direct free kick at a World Cup or European Championship finals.

The currently clubless superstar has only scored once.

Uruguay didn't get into the game at all for a long time - and still almost took the lead.

Rodrigo Bentancur, called up as a defensive midfielder, captured the ball in his own half, sprinted halfway, fooled three Portuguese defenders and then failed to meet keeper Diogo Costa (33').

Both teams were careful to make as few mistakes as possible and almost didn't create any chances.

The Portuguese suffered a personal setback just before half-time when left-back Nuno Mendes was injured and left the pitch crying.

Dortmund's Raphaël Guerreiro came on for him (42').

At the beginning of the second half, a streaker who ran onto the field with a rainbow flag caused a brief interruption.

Photos show that the man was also wearing a T-shirt that read 'Save Ukraine' and 'Respect for Iranian Women'.

After the break, Portugal got stronger again.

First, João Félix put the ball on the side netting from a tight angle (52'), then the 2016 European champions took the lead.

Bruno Fernandes crossed the ball into the penalty area from the left.

Ronaldo rose to head the ball but just missed the ball. However, Uruguay keeper Sergio Rochet was visibly disoriented and the ball went into the goal (54').

Uruguay only woke up in the closing stages – and almost equalized.

But the South Americans missed the best opportunities.

Maxi Gómez hit the post (75'), substitute Suárez hit the side netting (78').

Shortly before the end, Portugal received a controversial hand penalty, which Bruno Fernandes converted (90+3).
