2022 World Cup: Netherlands and Senegal qualified, Ecuador eliminated

2022-11-29T17:39:44.037Z

The last day of Group A delivered its verdict on Tuesday. Unsurprisingly, the Netherlands finish first and slip into the round of 16

There were few doubts regarding the outcome of Netherlands-Qatar.

At Al-Khor stadium on Tuesday, Cody Gakpo, the young Dutch striker, killed all suspense by opening the scoring in the 27th minute, signing his 3rd goal of the World Cup.

He is only the second player in history to open the scoring in three first-round encounters.

For good measure, De Jong doubled the lead in the second half, picking up a volley from Depay saved by goalkeeper Barsham (2-0, 49th).

Eliminated on Friday, the host country, three defeats in three games, only one goal scored, will have been only a mere extra in its World Cup.

For their part, the Oranje of Louis Van Gaal, with 7 points, take first place in group A, without ever having enchanted the audience in three games.

In the round of 16, at the Khalifa International stadium in Doha on Saturday (4 p.m.), they have an appointment with the 2nd of group B, which remains to be determined, between the United States and Iran presumably - which teams compete this Tuesday (8 p.m.).

Three times finalist (1974, 1978, 2010) but never winner, Holland will play its 11th round of 16 in the World Cup.

For the 2nd qualifying place, the uncertainty was complete between Ecuador and Senegal who faced each other in a kind of "16th final".

A simple draw and Enner Valencia's Ecuador moved on to the round of 16.

A victory for Senegal and the Teranga Lions snatched their ticket.

Senegal, twenty years after the exploit of 2002

To the incessant rhythm of Senegalese drums and trumpets and with Clément Turpin, the French referee on the whistle, the African champions validated this last option at the Khalifa stadium.

In the round of 16, at the Al-Bayt stadium on Sunday (8 p.m.), it is plausible that Senegal will face England, if the latter against Wales on Tuesday (8 p.m.) preserves its first place in the group B. Three Lions against Teranga Lions, here is a (potential) poster that already gives the fangs...

The Senegalese entered the game from the right end.

The Parisian Gana Gueye saw his powerful shot graze the left upright of Galindez (3rd).

Then, well served, the former RĂ©mois Dia (Salernitana) crossed his shots too much (9th).

However, Aliou Cissé's players clearly maintained their hold throughout the first period and were rewarded with a goal before half-time, a penalty caused and converted by Ismaïla Sarr, former Metz and Rennes player.

After the break, the emotional elevator went back and forth.

A cross from the right, a header from Caicedo (1-1, 68th) and the "Tri" (the Habs) was in the round of 16.

She will only stay there for two minutes, until Koulibaly, the captain of the Lions, in ambush on a second ball in the area, does not restore with a flat right foot crossed the advantage and the qualification in Senegal ( 1-2, 70th).

Too bad for the Ecuadorian "Tri" who had taken to dreaming after having nicely moved the Netherlands 1-1 on Friday, and put Senegal on the back foot during the last 20 minutes.

Koulibaly and his family follow in the footsteps of the "2002" class, of Aliou Cissé, El Hadji Diouf and another Papa Bouba Diop, quarter-finalist of the World Cup in Japan and Korea, 20 years ago, eliminated by Turkey , 1-0 after extra time.
