Portugal's 1-0 win over Uruguay was a mystery: who scored?

The jubilant Ronaldo or Bruno Fernandes who gives the cross?

The question of whether or not Cristiano Ronaldo scored 1-0 in Portugal's victory over Uruguay at the World Cup in Qatar is still a hotly debated issue in the sporting world.

The 54th minute was running, Bruno Fernandes had the ball on the left and crossed with his right foot to the goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo jumped, at least that's for sure, in an inimitable manner and tried to head the ball into the net.

The ball itself eventually tumbled past Uruguay goalkeeper Rochet into the net, whether touched or not.

1-0 for Portugal, the game ended 2-0 for the Europeans, taking Portugal into the round of 16.

Even the numerous slow-motion shots and the many cameras in the stadium could not confirm whether Ronaldo touched the ball.

Ronaldo himself, however, was sure, cheered exuberantly and, even after the game, when FIFA announced Bruno Fernandes as the scorer, could not be dissuaded and indicated with gestures that he had deflected the ball slightly.

System reveals crosser Fernandes as a goalscorer

Now it has become known that Ronaldo wrote a message to the British journalist Piers Morgan from the dressing room, in which he again claimed to have touched the ball.

That writes the British newspaper Daily Mail.

Morgan is the TV reporter Ronaldo gave the famous interview to, which prompted Manchester United and the Portuguese to part ways.

And the question of the goalscorer?

That should have been answered by now.

The so-called "Connected Ball Technology" is integrated in every tournament ball from the manufacturer Adidas, with the help of which every impulse acting on the ball can be detected.

Contacts between players, the bounce of the ball on the pitch, the system can measure all of that.

With Ronaldo's supposed header, the system measured: nothing.

And the actual scorer?

He reacted calmly.

"I don't think it really matters who scored the goal," said Bruno Fernandes after the game.

He had the feeling that Ronaldo had touched the ball slightly.

"But the only important thing is that we made it into the next round and beat a very big opponent." (fmü)
