The 38-year-old Frenchwoman will be the first woman to officiate as a central referee during a World Cup match.

It enters, once again, in the history of football.

Stéphanie Frappart will become the first woman to referee a World Cup match this Thursday evening.

The 38-year-old Frenchwoman was appointed this Tuesday evening by Fifa to officiate as central referee for the decisive Group E match between Costa Rica and Germany, two teams which will aim for qualification for the round of 16 of the World Cup.

She will be accompanied for this occasion by three South American assistants.

Since the start of the competition, Stéphanie Frappart had officiated in two matches (Mexico-Poland, Portugal-Ghana), but only as fourth referee, like her two colleagues, the Rwandan Salima Mukansanga and the Japanese Yoshimi Yamashita, also selected for referee at this World Cup.

It's one more step in the rich career of the 38-year-old referee, used to breaking all barriers.

She has already been the first woman to officiate in Ligue 2 (2014), Ligue 1 (2019), European Super Cup (2019), Champions League (2020), Europa League (2020) and the final of Coupe de France last May.
