World Cup 2022: Senegal moves into the round of 16 against Ecuador, Netherlands group winners

In Group A there was a decision based on the fair play rating – it didn't come to that, but Senegal's win against Ecuador was still dramatic. The Netherlands are also through, but struggled against Qatar for a long time.

The Netherlands and Senegal are in the World Cup round of 16.

The Netherlands won 2-0 (1-0) against Qatar, Senegal in the parallel game 2-1 (1-0) against Ecuador.

The last day of the game in Group A had been eagerly awaited. If the Dutch and Ecuadorians had equal goals, the fair play rating would have had to decide or possibly even a draw.

Ecuador and Senegal were confident at the start, with the African champions pushing forward with more determination.

But both playmaker Idrissa Gueye (3rd) and attacker Boulaye Dia (8th) aimed too imprecisely.

Ecuador struggled going forward in the game, mainly because Enner Valencia didn't look quite fit.

The striker, who has scored all three of his team's World Cup goals so far, was substituted in the last game against the Netherlands with knee problems.

Although the South Americans had much more possession of the ball, the Senegalese, who repeatedly made the game fast, became dangerous.

Winger Ismaïla Sarr in particular kept getting through, like in the 24th minute when he beat Ecuador's Angelo Preciado but then shot over the goal (24').

Shortly before the break, Sarr scored his goal.

After a long ball into the box, Ecuador's Piero Hincapié was late and cleared Sarr.

The player who was fouled took the penalty himself and safely converted it to the bottom right (44th).

In the second half, Ecuador came into play much better and pushed Senegal in the back.

El Tri didn't create clear chances for a long time - and still managed to equalize.

Félix Torres headed a corner to Moisés Caicedo, who pushed the ball over the line from close range (67').

The draw would have been enough for Ecuador to advance to the round of 16, but Senegal struck back almost immediately.

After a Gueye free-kick, captain Kalidou Koulibaly fired in from the fray (70') and put Senegal back in second place.

With seven points, the Netherlands move into the round of 16 as group winners.

But they couldn't really convince in the third World Cup game either.

The Dutch found it difficult against Qatar, who had already been eliminated and defended deeply.

It only became dangerous through coincidences: Frenkie de Jong, for example, shot his team-mate Davy Klaassen in the penalty area, and Memphis Depay shot the rebound over the goal with a side kick (14').

Or when the powerful Memphis dropped from the center of the attack and drove the combination game.

One of the most beautiful of these combinations then also led to the Dutch leadership.

Memphis, Cody Gakpo, Klaassen and Gakpo again were the stops before the PSV Eindhoven star player shot in from the edge of the penalty area (26').

Qatar rarely got deals, and when they did, they weren't dangerous.

In the second round, de Jong dusted off for the preliminary decision, Memphis had previously failed to goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham (49th).
