Germany needs a win against Costa Rica for the World Cup Round of 16.
So today the fair play rating or the drawing of lots could determine progress.
Doha – Germany have their backs to the wall at the 2022 World Cup, and a win against Costa Rica is imperative.
After the 2-1 draw against Japan at the start, the round of 16 seemed a long way off.
With the 1-1 draw against Spain in the second group game, the DFB team improved their starting position a little.
The round of 16 is within reach again, albeit no longer in our own hands.
Unless the eleven of national coach Hansi Flick celebrate a resounding victory or Spain goes down against Japan.
Both scenarios don't sound very likely.
Rather, Germany is dependent on Spanish support.
In the worst case, however, there is a risk of a decision on the fair play rating or the drawing of lots.
team | Gates | difference | Points |
1. Spain | 8:1 | 7 | 4 |
2. Japan | 2:2 | 0 | 3 |
3. Costa Rica | 1:7 | -6 | 3 |
4. Germany | 2:3 | -1 | 1 |
World Cup 2022: Direct comparison or goal difference - this is how Germany will progress safely
The starting position before the German World Cup group match against Costa Rica is quite clear.
Germany is doomed to win and would then have four points on the account if they were successful.
If Japan lose to Spain with three points in their favor thanks to the win against Germany before the last matchday, Germany will be in the round of 16.
If the Japanese actually get a point against the playfully superior Spaniards, it will be tricky.
Then at the World Cup it is not the direct comparison that decides, but the goal difference.
Means: Germany would need a win against Costa Rica by two goals to be on the safe side.
A simple win would also be enough as long as the DFB-Elf scored more goals than Japan.
If both teams end up with the same number of points and goals, the Blue Samurai would go through with a 2-1 win at the start due to the direct duel they won (Group E at the 2022 World Cup)

Fair play rating at the 2022 World Cup: Germany has more yellow cards than Spain
So far so good.
But what happens in the same scenario between Germany and Spain?
Admittedly not an unlikely constellation, but as we all know, anything is possible in football.
Suppose Japan creates the sensation and, after Germany, also beats Spain 2-1.
Then the Blue Samurai would be group winners and Germany and Spain, who split 1-1 in a direct duel, would fight for second place.

This is how Germany reached the World Cup round of 16 today - the scenarios
In this case, Germany would need a 7-0 win over Costa Rica to draw level with Spain.
Then the fair play rating would actually have to decide on the entry into the World Cup round of 16.
Here the Iberians are currently with only one yellow card just ahead of Germany with three warnings.

World Cup 2022: Fair play rating influenced Mexico's exit - Poland and Lewandowski celebrated
Such a curious decision almost came on Wednesday evening.
Mexico and Poland were tied on points and goals until just before the end.
But the Poles around Robert Lewandowski were just ahead with 5-7 yellow cards.
Grzegorz Krychowiak, who received a yellow card, was substituted to be on the safe side.
In injury time, the Central Americans threw everything forward to score the one goal they needed, but conceded the 1-2 goal in injury time.
As a result, the fair play rating was not applied.
Incidentally, four years ago Japan reached the round of 16 due to the fair play rule, Senegal was left behind.
World Cup draw: Drama between Germany and Spain is imminent – draw by FIFA
If there is also a tie between Germany and Spain in the fair play rating, things will get really dramatic.
Because then a draw will be made by FIFA.
After the discussions between the DFB and the world association about the "One Love" bandage, that would have a bad aftertaste for everyone involved.
The referee in the German game, Stéphanie Frappart, could therefore play a not unimportant role.
The World Cup premiere of a woman on the whistle was also a topic on ZDF, expert Christoph Kramer was angry about the specific question asked by moderator Müller-Hohenstein.
At the end of the day, however, the players on the pitch are responsible, and in the run-up to the game, people are already busy puzzling over the Germany line-up.
